Michif

Michif is the language of Métis people once spoken all across the homeland. Like most Aboriginal languages, the number of Michif speakers declined due to the colonization process that attempted to stamp out the use of languages other than English and French.

Efforts are now underway to preserve Michif, and introduce Métis youth to their heritage language. As part of that effort, the Métis Nation of Ontario has created on-line Michif resources. These are:

  • Audio recordings of Michif speakers with English and French translations. Click here to access this resource.
  • Video recordings of Michif speakers with English and French translations. Click here to access this resource.
  • Michif Word of the Day. A different Michif word is presented each day and other Michif speakers can record alternate pronunciations.  There is also an archive of all past words of the day. Click here to access this resource.
