The Métis Nation of Ontario
Cultural Commission
The Métis Nation of Ontario Cultural Commission (MNOCC) is a not-for-profit corporation that secured charity status in the fall of 2002. A nine-member Board of Directors that was appointed to a two-year term by the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario in April 2000 manages the MNOCC.
Mission: To preserve and promote Métis history, values, traditions and pride in Métis Arts and Culture.
Short term and/or ongoing goals:
• Sponsor cultural conferences and workshops
• Support/sponsor cultural exchanges
• Co-host international conference on Being and Becoming Métis
• Ensure that traditional knowledge is protected
• Merchandise Métis goods
• Produce a compact disc of Métis heritage music
• Promote/sponsor Métis exhibits and displays
• Promote Métis culture by participating in community festivals and exhibitions
• Develop MNOCC promotional materials
• Ensure the maintenance of Métis archives, genealogical database, historical records, publications, manuscripts, letters and photographs
• Repatriate Métis artifacts
• Create and administer a Métis Order of the Sash
• Promote Métis Voyageur Games in all communities
• Train community citizens to interview Elders to capture oral history
• Develop a video documentary of Métis Elders telling their stories
• Provide support for Métis artists
• Promote Métis spirituality
• Encourage accomplished Métis artists to mentor/foster emerging artists
• Sponsor/promote retreats for Métis artists
• Promote oral history projects
MNOCC Medium term goals:
• Strive to have Métis dancers and fiddlers in every community
• Document Métis history
• Ensure unwritten chapters of Métis history are captured
• Develop a Métis Arts Foundation endowment
• Sponsor a Métis Arts Festival
• Develop a Métis Hall of Fame
• Sponsor a summer camp for cultural/sports activities
• Encourage Métis individuals to photograph Métis events and individuals for the archives
• Digitize Métis archives
• Develop Métis Botanical gardens
• Develop Métis Community Cultural & Recreational Centres
MNOCC Long term goals:
• Make Métis history books available in every library and also through the Internet
• Affect changes to the provincial school curriculum to include Métis history
• Set up Chair position at a university
• Provide a Métis culture museum
• Provide a gathering place for Métis Elders, perhaps in Sault Ste. Marie
• Develop an educational institute
• Create a Métis school of Arts
• Revitalize the Michif language
• Develop a Métis Broadcast Institute
