Celebration of Métis Culture

Event Details:

Join the McEwen School of Architecture, in collaboration with the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Sudbury Métis Council, Laurentian University, and Laurentian's Indigenous Student Affairs, in a celebration of Métis culture as part of Louis Riel Day! The day will feature a flag raising ceremony, a birch bark canoe demonstration, presentations, snacks, music and more!

11:30 a.m. - Flag raising ceremony at Tom Davies Square (City Hall) - 200 Brady Street

12:30 p.m. - Guests are invited to walk back to Laurentian University to take part in other activities:

85 Elm Street - Across from Shopper's Drug Mart
Downtown Subudy

1:00 p.m. - Prayer and Introduction by Juliette Denis, Métis Elder and MNO citizen

1:20 p.m. – 2:00 pm. – Talks by:

  • Rick Meilleur from Collège Boréal, Métis Elder and MNO citizen
  • Jessica Poirier, MNO Sudbury Métis Council Youth Representative
  • David Fortin, Métis Architect; and
  • Marcel Labelle, Métis Elder, MNO citizen and canoe craftsman.

2:00 p.m. – Tour of the construction of a birch bark canoe by Marcel Labelle and Laurentian Architecture students
