In recent years, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) has become increasingly focused on supporting and generating economic opportunities for Métis people. With this objective in mind, in 2009, the MNO requested and received funding from Aboriginal and Northern Affairs (previously Indian and Northern Affairs) to hire a Business Development Officer. This officer was tasked with indentifying potential business opportunities for the MNO and Métis citizens in order to build linkages with business partners and to support the Métis business community.
The MNO’s Education and Training Branch is also involved in creating opportunities for Métis citizens to participate in the economy in meaningful ways. In November 2010, the MNO became the first Aboriginal organization to be approved under the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Strategy (ASETS).
Youth are well represented within the MNO’s governance structure. The MNO Youth Council has elected representatives from across Ontario and maintains a seat on the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO), the MNO’s central governing authority.
