Name:
Lori Elizabeth O’Connor
I grew up north of Rainy
River, Ontario, the oldest of five kids ranging in age
from 9 to 25, where everyone hunted and fished
and trapped. I came to Nova Scotia in 1999 to attend
St Francis Xavier University. I studied English and
Celtic studies (folklore!), and made a fuss when an
American prof said, “There were no Metis between
Red River and Fort William.” I moved to Halifax
when I graduated, and when the Powley decision came
out in the fall of 2003, I thought, “I need to
do something that makes that much difference.”
So I applied to Dalhousie’s law/information management
joint degree, and was accepted. This is my third year
at Dalhousie and the second of my law degree, and I’m
hoping to work at Dalhousie Legal Aid this summer.
I Have: a big
family, a knitting addiction, and a really short attention
span
Biggest Challenge:
keeping perspective in law school and maintaining my
identity
People have no idea:
how much they can accomplish
My Motivation:
"Never doubt that a small group of dedicated citizens
can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that
ever has.” - Margaret Mead
I've been to:
all the provinces and none of the territories in Canada
Best Moment:
every time I go home, step off the escalator at the
airport and see my people.
Thanks to: my
family and community.
I want to: change
the world.
I believe: that
we can make a difference.
