Name:
Jennifer Seib-Adese
I Have: Learned
that youth must listen to Elders.
Biggest Challenge:
Dealing with the legacy of suicide among Aboriginal
people. My father committed suicide shortly after
my 2nd birthday --- it has been the hardest thing to
forgive, but I have used the sadness and anger as a
motivating factor to be the change I want to see in
the world.
Few people have any
idea: That I recorded back-up vocals to a Dominican
Creole Soca CD.
My Motivation:
My father's suicide and the loss of connection to my
family (my sister and I were separated for 23 years!)
have motivated me to finish my HBA and soon my MA writing
on issues that affect Aboriginal people.
I've been to:
A few cities in England, France, and the US --- and
to the Gathering of Nations Powwow in New Mexico! (1999)
Best Moment:
Seeing the look on my 83 year old grandmother's face
after she had not seen me in 15 years, and when she
saw my sister and I together for the first time since
my father's death. Also, seeing the look of happiness
on her face when I told her all about the Cree and Métis
things I have been learning!
Thanks to: Ni
mama --- who never let me forget where I came from.
I want to:
Finish my Masters degree and complete a Ph.D. in Native
Studies. I hope to become a Professor of Native
Studies and encourage other Aboriginal people to infuse
the walls of academia with their spirit. I want
to make sure that our people's voices are heard in academic
spaces that have negatively affect us for so long.
I believe: you
must be the change you wish to see in the world.
I am Metis
