This is a very good site on Métis's. I am a Métis from the descendant's of the Innuit Nation of Labrador. My great etc. grandfather and Innuit Grandmother started the Métis Culture in Labrador so I come from a very distinct culture of Métis which I'm very proud of. I have my Métis card and am in the process of getting my children and their childres cards. I would really love to help out the Métis but don't know where to go or who to talk to about it. I would also like to get your newsletter sent to me. If you can help me it would be greatly appreciated. My email address is aboriginalmetis@hotmail.com We have traced our family history on Pierre Francois (ditSansregret)Michelin. He came to Trois Rivieres, Quebec in the late 1600's or early 1700's since he married Claire (Filet) about 1731. She came from France also. If anyone has any more info on them please contact me.

Tanishi at tout le monde. Well here in Sudbury we had a wonderful Louis Riel Day. I Hope yours went well wherever you may have had it. Here we had the honour of celebrating it with a celebrity, Mr. Rick Mercer from the 22 minute show. The Mayor of Sudbury also attented very proudly beside a numerous amount of Mitis Citizens . We also intended to launch our own Mitis web site, however, a surprise phone call got me all excited... I had the leave and go to Timmins and visit my newest grand-daughter who came to this world on the 17 of Nov. Congrates to my daughter and her new Baby girl "Dakota".

Thank you,
Mitis Rick

I love coming to this site and getting updated on current affairs. We have come a long way as a Mitis people, and we will continue to push forth with adventures that open up new doors.

I'd like to take this time to say thank you to all the people that work hard for us, ensuring our Tribe (to me we are a tribe) Mitis is not forgotten and deserve to gain what is rightfully ours!

We have a bright future as a people of our own within North America :) I am proud to be a part of it - The Mitis

Well another day that went very well. Special thank you goes out to Senator Mott and her daughter Gail for representing The Métis Nation of Ontario at the Memorial service at the Sudbury Arena. They presented a wreath on behalf of our warriors that we lost through wars and normal life. It was also dedicated to Sudbury;'s own Métis warriors who passed away but never forgotten, Mr. Howard Deschamps and Marcel Boulard.
Again Thank you

I'm trying to make contact with the Micmac Nation to learn more about my heritage. My Great Grandmother's name was Francois (Fannie) Muis. She was born on Surett's Island, NS. She was of Micmac Heritage, she may even have been Métis (is that French and Native Indian?).
I was amazed to discover she died on my birthday in 1929.

Well again we were denied another issue in the Métis Nation, as you recall having a vote for the most popular Canadien in Canada;'s history Louis Riel was on the list. He made it just below the first 10 people ....11th . Just letting you know that for some of the canadiens Don Cherry & Wayne Gretsky were more important, makes you wonder the outcome of certain things especially when those people move out of the country and spend their hard earned money from Canadiens in the States. What did they really do for Canada? That is just me, my opinion but feel free to discuss this between yourselves.

I appreciate printed words discussing What is a metis person? Some people will look at me and say you have some aboriginal in you don't you? I feel like replying which part of me do you think may be aboriginal? My feet, my hands perhaps my eyes. This is a battle of my life. It makes me feel that I must continually be proving who I am. I was adopted as so many others have been . As an aboriginal person I just want this question to be laid at rest. Sincerely Carol Turner Warkentin

I found your site very interesting. I read about the "Métis" in a book by Louis L'Amour and looked it up on the web. I tried to carefully read the article "What in the heck is a Métis?" I'm afraid I'm still not as enlightened as I should be. It says "mixed blood." I'm confused about whether they were here all along like our Native Americans, or if they are mixed with all the immigrants that came. I am interested because it sounds as though they had many of their rights taken away from them. Were they all herded somewhere as our (five civilized tribes as they are called) Indians were? For instance, like the Cherokees were sent out on "The Trail of Tears?" Also, one needs to be defining.
I am German, English, Irish, Gypsy, and Cherokee....mostly pretty diluted by now :)
but I call that "mixed blood."
Thanks for an interesting article. JK

Your site is excellent .. except for your "application" area. There is not enough space for my mailing address, and no place for an e-mail address so that forms could be sent as an attachment. I started out many years ago (1995-96)attending some initial meetings in Penetanguishene (Georgian Bay Council)but wound up involved with the Canadian Métis Council. I haven't heard from them in a couple of years so I guess they "took the cash and dashed!!!". I just recently retired so will have time to get active again. Jim (Peneseh)

Hi to everyone. While I'm not Métis, my wife and our 4 children recently got their Métis cards. Thanks to everyone at MNO for your hard work.
I have a suggestion to add to this excellent website. If you read many of the entries in this guestbook, you'll notice that an interactive messageboard or chat area would be a wonderful addition to this site. That way, the questions that are asked here could be answered and added to by anyone who participates. Also, it would be great if entries were dated, too.
Thanks to Carolyn and Ron Tumber for all of their research into Carolyn's (and my wife, Joanne's) family heritage.

Hi Nice, informative site..I will be actively seeking Métis status from today and until I do get some answers and results.
I have not sought any advice as of tonight.
I do know that my great grandmother was I believe from a Cree Reserve in Quebec and my great grandfather could not speak English (FRENCH ONLY)and he was from Quebec.
That of course makes me the 3rd generation of the French Cree mix.
Even when I find out the actual documentation, and I don't qualify for Métis status,I may then know my roots so as to answer or show my little girls their heritage and family roots

I was drawn to your site in my quest to verify my family has Métis heritage. I have a log book that documents our ancestors coming to Canada in the late 1700's. One of the first logs talks about living with the Métis in the Peterborough/Madoc area in Ontario. It would help explain my families natural darker skin colour. If you can direct me on where I could go to further research this, I would be very grateful.

Once again we are seeing the crown put limits on our rights by offering a limited amount of harvesting certificates (1250). This action will cause infighting and can only truely be seen as a means of control by the crown. Section # 35 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives us all the same rights. 1 for all and all for 1 = the same. Not some for me and none for you!

Hello,
my name is Jennifer and this website was given to my mother by a metis woman who thought it may be of help. My mother is trying to find out the backround of my grandmother who was born in Moncton, New brunswick on August 29th, 1938. She was put into foster care as a child so therefore we have no information about her parents. We believe she is part, if not fully or mostly fully aboriginial, however we do not know of which tribe. My grandmother's name was Helen McCann, and I know this was quite some time ago, but if anyone at all has information on how or where I can find any records or anything at all to find out if she was indeed native Indian. I guess we don't have any proof if she was or not but she looked extremely native (dark skin, black hair, native features) and we always believed she was. We just want to verify it for my mothers sake, as she doesn't know much about her backround. I am part Mohawk and metis on my dad's side and we would like to find out my mom's side as well. Thank you to anyone who may be of help. Even just suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you and God bless,
Jennifer.

I was just reading the daily newspaper july 8/04 and in it stated that the metis people will now be able to hunt and fish for food without the threat of being charged or having their equipment seized by provincial offcials. Terms of the agreement is for 2 yrs, but that only 1250 harvesting cards will be issued in ontario. Tony belcourt states on the metis web site that effectively immediately metis people will be able to hunt and fish without of being charged. But why is there an agreement with the MNR to issued only 1250 harvesting cards. we've been fighting for these rights for years and now only 1250 can get the right to hunt and fish, which also states that the harvesting season is from september to december. It sound like to me that the metis nation people only won the right to 1250 harvesting tags, just like when people apply for the moose draw throught the MNR.If all metis in Ontario are equal and we have are own registry to identify someone as metis, than all the registared metis people who are registared with the MNO registry should have the right to hunt and fish, not only 1250 of us. We should be dealing for all of us not for 1250 lucky ones.

I was born to an English Mother and a Native Father in Toronto in 1947. I was fostered/adopted by an English-Irish family and raised as one of their own, but I never was, to their children and after their parents passed away in '87 &'93, I was informed that since there was no need to pretend anymore I was not welcome in the family. At age 19 in 1967 I met my natural mother, who told me my natural father was native and gave me some data I have since lost, namely his last name was Hanes born 28 or 29 of November 1928. I tried to find my status at the Canadian Government office on St Clair and Yonge St's in Toronto, as late as the early 90's and got forms to register as the "son of a native father" which was receintly opened to allow status previously denied to persons in my situation. I still have no status or any way to trace my heritage but there is no doubt I am native ethnically, and take after my paternal genetic line. If you have any resources that could help me to trace my roots I would be very thankful.

As a self identifing METIS i am proud of the efforts done on my behalf. As a boy growing up in northern Ontario near the Missisaga Reserve in Blind River i had always wondered who my people were. Until recently i did not know that my ancestry was METIS. My older brothers and sisters knew long before i found out. Since both of my parents passed years ago i had no idea that my aboriginal connection existed. I now realize that all of my growing up years my parents hid their liniage from myself and siblings to protect us from shame and humility of being called "half breeds". I now walk with pride and confidence of who i am. I now know that their is a purpose to all of the stuggles of our people. I will pass to my children and grand children the knowledge of our peoples struggles to be heard. I speak loud and proud to be METIS. Thanks for your site. Ron Piche.

Great web site . I have a poll going on,who could guess the closest to when the metis will have the rights that are in the constitution (sec 35a)
im thinking in the area of 2050 or never.
-Government stalling..?
-leaders on the take..?
We are going to need a major protest block some roads or something so we can be herd.
since the steve powley case ive heard nothing about progress in our rights nothing at all whats up with that.
its all bull shit.
What happened to our constitution?

The Niagara Métis Association (NMA) endorses and advocates for DNA testing to assist in establishing Aboriginal genealogy links. Current DNA testing is based on generally accepted scientific principles, accurate, judicially accepted and relatively inexpensive. Like documentary evidence, a provable DNA connection to the Métis Nation genetic family tree should and likely will be an important adjunct, if not mandatory, future requirement for meeting membership criteria into the great Métis Nation. Métis National heritage is precious and must be protected.

Best regards to all,

The Niagara Métis Association

I think it takes more than rummaging through some dusty old archive and speculating that one's great great great grandmother could have been an ''indian princess''to qualify one to be regarded a metis. The growing number of white people today claiming some mythical indian ancestor to gain political or economic benefits only serves to dilute aboriginal rights in the future for actual metis who lived and continue to live the culture. If the trend continues to grow then the identity of metis will become a cheap caricature of a people who fought and died out in the cold prairies defending what was their right.

Please thank the Powley family for standing along with their father, husband and more during for all of us. He advanced the Métis caused so fast even though it took 10 years for him, but really a short time in comparison to the 100 or more years fight the Métis have engaged in with this government in our homeland. I bless him and all his family and that included the extended family, during their grief, but for all time as he favoured us for all time.

Diabeties has become a major killer of over people and so we must take this fight on also if we are to keep our elders and their wisdom.

Thank You and The Creators' Generosity for letting us fight a good fight. And we have only just begun.

Some of my first cousins have successfully claimed metis recognition however they have connections from other side(s) of their families as well. My questions are as follows:-

1) My suspected native connections come from the Golden and Sutherland families north and east of the Bancroft areas.

2) Also, does anyone know about the small tribe (community) of natives called in English: 'The People of the Shallows' from around the east side of Algonquin Park.

3) I have an incomplete mailing address for the Ontario Métis Association in Ottawa. Can someone help me please/thanks.

Hi, I've just started researching my metis roots and not much info yet. My father's name was Rosaire Lamirande, grandfather, Denis or Dennis Lamirande, born in timmins, i think, had cousins in Ste_eugenes de guigues Quebec, my grandmother's name was laura brassard or Brossard, no clue yet where she was born. I grew up in a supposedly french canadian family> my grandmother was the one with the native blood I was told, like a lot of other people, nobody wanted to admit they were metis at that time. I've read a couple of books on riel so far, I know I'm metis whether I can ever prove it or not, people have often asked me if I was native. I went to an opening of a new store and they had metis music playing and I felt like I was home. What a relief not to have to answer when people ask if I'm part native,,,,well, I'm mostly french canadian with some indian and a little bit of Irish. I always thought I only had one native grandmother, but when I went looking for Lamirande's on the internet, I found that there were a lot in the metis scrip in the west but I haven't been able to find anything yet about Lamirande's in northern ontario or quebec. I am metis and proud of it, whether I end up getting a metis card or not. when people ask if I'm part native now, I say, no I'm metis. thank you for this great site, I will be applying for the necessary documents and we do have an office in Sudbury which I haven't been able to visit yet, but I plan to shortly. Keep up the good work and if anyone can help me trace my lineage it would be much appreciated

Dear Métis Brothers & Sisters,
I regret to inform you that the Métis Genealogy Database website will no longer be available. Unfortunately, Sault College of Sault Ste Marie has filed a civil suit against its publisher, maintaining that it has defamed its character. To me, just another way of oppressing the underdog. This site was constructed and maintained for the Métis people, free to use as a way to search genealogy. A warning was posted on the website to potential nursing students, due to the fact that a handful of 6th semester final year students were canned for little or no reason. The publisher of Métisgenealogy.com felt it only right to warn the people and had no intention of maliciously damaging the college or any individual. it seems only right that "if a shoe fits, wear it". SO in ending, if my reward for years of research and helping people results in losing my livelyhood, I feel it in my best interest to remove the website.
sincerely

Hello, You are doing a good job on this net.

I have been searching for my family, but have not been able to find anything on them. Not even my father. I was told by a lady who had Ponca on her Colorado plates, that she had heard of my family, what she told me was that my family were Métis from Red River region. The subject got started when I told her I was from the Ponca region of Nebraska. She told me, my great great grand father married a Ponca woman. This is the first I had ever heard of it. When I was over seas, in the military in the 70's, I was told that there were Roberts from Canada that were looking for descendants of Everett Roberts. I wasn't told this until about a year ago.

I know you are busy, keep up the good work.

Thank you for your time

Bonjour hello and all the rest.

I am pleased to see that the metis are growing in strength and numbers. It warms the heart to see that more and more people are realizing what a rich and colourful heritage we share. I do have one complaint. That is I have difficulty searching for information as to our rights as a people as they now stand. My wife is status C2 aboriginal and I am a metis. We have three children . They (as I legally understand it) do not qualify for aboriginal status. I wish to obtain their metis status, however, I fear this may impede their ability to Identify as an aboriginal. The band will not recognize the children or help them in any way but they will help their mother. The metis do not (I believe) have the resources to help them in a capacity in which they desperately need. The website may benefit our peoples if there was a means to add a link to somewhere that we could find answers to our legal queries.
One last note....Mr Belcourt...Tony...I am disappointed to see that in trying to e-mail you from the address given bearing your name merely directs me to the metis nation homepage. C`mon sir, give your peoples a means to communicate with you.
Whith all due respect,
one of many of your much needed voters.

Hi everyone...just wanted to comment on how great Kathleen Lannigan is - she works in Hamilton, Ont.

My name is Kelli O'Connor, and I went through MNO for a grant for school. I am now living and working in New Zealand, and playing ice hockey for the provincial team in Canterbury...but of course, my heart belongs to Canada...

The Maori culture is similar to our Native Canadian background, and it is great to work alongside wonderful people here!

Without the help and support of Kathleen and the MNO, I would have never had this opportunity.

Thanks...oh, and feel free to email me about New Zealand!

I am helping to research a distant relative, Catherine Gan, born about 1795 in Canada. Her mother came from France and her father may have been a metis using the name LaFleur. Gan may be shortened from Generean or Genereux. Several of her children went by LaFleur which was probably a dit name. I'm hoping to find some metis connection to the names Gan, Generean, or Genereux.

Like most people with suspected Métis background in a French family, no one would ever admit that there was Native in our lineage. After five years of intense searching, I still can't find the Métis/Native connection to my Boucher line, though I know it exists. Still trying, and will keep trying. This website has provided me with valuable information and is one I return to on a regular basis.

I'm happy to see the communication taking place within the Métis community as a whole. We are only strong if we stand together - one reed by itself can be easily broken, many reeds bound together by a common thread with stay strong for many thousands of years. It feels very good.

I'm looking for information regarding James Sangster who married Mary Flett. They had 4 children-Marie-Agathe born 1872, Ethel 1874, John Joseph 1876 and William (the only info I have on him is that he lived with the Petrini family in St. Pierre Jolys, Mb, Canada and shortly after his marriage in 1905 moved to Quebec. This has been a brick wall for me to find any information. I am wanting to find the names of the parents of both James Sangster and Mary Flett (possibly a copy of the marriage certificate). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!! I know that they were married in Thunder Bay.

I was aware of the Métis Nation, from doing genealogy, then I found a series of novels by Peter Bowen, that deals with the Métis people. The hero of the the books is Gabriel Du Pre, supposedly a descendant of a man who worked with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I really liked the people in the books and wanted to find out more information about the Métis Nation.

I am a metis from NB. I would like to share the history of my nation from the east. This is our unknown history you mostly cannot find in the books 1. Before michif we had a language called chiac(mi'kmaq, maliseet, french mix) 2. two metis men from NB - Joseph Brossard and Joe LeBeauf were arrested for treason 100 years before Louis Riel suffered the same fate. 3. In 1780 we had to decide to give up identity or suffer more persicution from then government and church. 4. The first people to be sold into slavery were eastern metis in north america long before africans. 5. The first time the metis word was ever used and recoded was in NB. Are we not metis too? Do we not qualify as a culture?

Hello fellow Métis!
I am finding it very difficult to talk to other Métis. I am one of two children, to a single parent, of the only Métis family in my area. I am discovering a challenge in front of me when trying to be involved in the Métis Community... as, there isn't one near me.
I have no one to turn to to learn from, to ask questions, no one to give me an opportunity to share my patriotism and sense of pride for my heritage.
I was wondering if you could help me. If you knew someone I could contact with questions, or someone you knew that I could meet... I am a Métis, and proud of it. I just no one to share that pride with.

First of all, I would like to compliment you on a wonderful website. I have always been interested in Louis Riel as I grew up not far from where he was born and raised in St. Boniface, Manitoba, although I now reside in Toronto. We took a little about him in history class at school but not to any great extent. And what I remember of the material was very biased (not in Riel's favour). I felt the issue of his so-called insanity was emphasized too much.
Eight years ago, I read a book by Regina author, Maggie Siggins, "Riel, A Life of Revolution". I learned a great deal more about this gifted man in her sympathetic portrayal of him. I also watched the re-trial of Riel and his Life and Times on CBC NewsWorld last October. They asked people as they left the trial if Riel would be exonerated in light of the values of today's society and most of them replied yes. I wholeheartedly agree. I feel his trial and execution were a travesty of justice.
Ironically, my background is English Protestant, so I am a member of the same race that was Riel's enemy - they just did not understand him - how could they? I feel Riel was well ahead of his time. Blending his finely tuned sense of justice with passion and intensity influenced by a devout Roman Catholic background and one-eighth Indian heritage combined to make a very impressive persona. Add to that mix his excellent education, intelligence, and complex personality - the Métis couldn't have had a more accomplished leader.
I personally believe that we are all equal in the eyes of God and I feel that the aboriginal and Métis people possess a very unique culture and played and still play to this day a very important role in contributing to the mosaic that is our great country. After all, the aboriginals and Métis were here first and they can certainly teach other races much about cherishing nature which of course, is a very major part of aboriginal and Métis spirituality. The white race still has a lot to learn and what it has done to the aboriginals and Métis (both in Riel's day and to some extent even today) leaves a great deal to be desired.
Again, an excellent website. I am very fascinated by the life of Louis Riel and I intend on visiting his grave and family home in St. Vital when my husband and I go to Winnipeg next summer.

I am trying to find any information on my roots. I am listed on the sences as Métis but have on official standing. My father was born in Heileighbury, ON and when his father moved them to Peterborough, ON he changed the name from Amiot to Amyotte. My Grandfather's mother was Elizabeth Hudson. My Grandfather's given name was Jean Batiste, I hope I have the spelling wright. My father didn't know of the name change till he was ready to retire and needed to get his birth certificate, he was in the Air force in WW2 but he was allowed church records to verify his age then. I am told that we are related to Henry Hudson but it seems nobody can show records to prove this or that we are actually Métis. Hopefuly you have some idea where I can go from here. Thank you. Is the Confederacy of Nova Scotia Métis, that is a Provincial Representative of the Canadian Métis Council, out of Hamilton, Ontario recognized as being Métis? And do they have hunting and fishing rights within Nova Scotia? I know people that claim they have these rights, but I'm not sure, if it's true or not. thank you

I have Métis in my family tree, but can't prove it, although I was recognized by the Rae government when I answered this question positively on a UIC application in 1993-4. My daughter gets me your little calendar every year, but this year she's in Africa. How can I get one of these calendars?

Greetings ! Please add me to your mailing list. For the past 11 years I have been satisfied to call myself Métis on the basis of my family's oral history. But now, I have decided to look for hard-copy to confirm the identity of Jeanette Des Lauriers (nee Belanger), my metisse grandmother, from St.-Paul -des-Métis, Alberta.
Any tips about where to begin my research would be appreciated.

Hi! My name is Thomas Joseph Rancour and recently moved back to Michigan after working with Athabascan Natives in Kenai, Alaska for a year. I have always felt compelled to work with Natives and recently found out that I may be part Métis Indian and am trying to obtain membership. I am brand new to this geneology stuff and found that My Great Great Grandfather came from a village de Rancourt near Alsace Lorraine France. His name was Louis Rancour or Rancourt and he married an Emily (Nellie) Thayer who family has explained was 100% Native Indian from Albany, New York. He supposedly founded the 1st school for Natives in Quebec. My great Grandfather I have found data and he was born on Calumet Island on the Ottawa River in 1840. His name was Alphonz Rancour. I would appreciate greatly any information you may have on this subject. I also was told that the t at the end of the name was dropped when they came to Michigan. Thanks!

My neice and nephew need help establishing their Métis status. Their mother has never expressed an interest in acknowledging her heritage.
Her sister, however, has done some research. Their Aunt is encouraging me to help the children get their Status Card as she is unable to help at this time.
The Aunt wrote:
"Here's a little 'Boisver' / 'Boucher' Family history: my mother's mother was Native, probably Montagnais. Many strangers who have seen me - Native people from near Montagnais territory, have told me I look Montagnais; 'my neice' looks a little like me, so there is a resemblance to the Nation.
My mother was poorly treated in the 50s and early 60s in Quebec, which is why they came to Ontario, where I was born. As a metis in Quebec, life was very unpleasant. So my mother raised us as 'white' kids, denying we were metis.
My maternal grandmother's name: Simone (b. Pageau) Boucher, died Jan-Feb. 1986
We don't know when / where she was born.
We don't have status cards, and need to know about Simone Pageau in order to apply. For 'the children' to get their cards, 'their mother' has to apply also - matrilineal.
If you are serious about finding out, ask the children to find out about her great-grandmother - place of birth, date of birth, parish, county, nearest city, etc. With this information, you may be able to find out who my grandmother really was, and if yes, how to go around a missing generation (my mother died June 19, 1996).
My sister has never been keen on this story. I really hope it works. I wish you the best in your diggings"
If anyone can help me find the documenttion required we would all be very thankful.

I have just read your too brief bio on L. Riel wherein it stated he taught and met his wife in Montana. I grew up in Montana (I am also a teacher) and would like very much to know where he taught.
In another bio it said he was insane, is this so?
I am very sad that this man was hanged.

I am reading a book, "Return to Hawk's Hill" wherein Louis Riel is prominently featured. My first question is answered as I see his name at your web site. Where can I get a brief history of this man and the Métis people. This book says they were decendents of the Cree and the French trappers. Someone must have started the first village.
How many old customs are still in practice.
Thank you,

I have been researching my geneology, and found my ancestors name all over the Red River Valley Métis Nation. Apparently, back in the late 1700- early 1800, there were a few Thomas' around the area. Unfortunately I'm having trouble understanding the dates that have been recorded, they do not co-inside with what our family bible have told us. Can you send me to a site where I may be able to check this out?

Hi!! My name is Victor. I like your website design very much. You have wealth of information on your site. I recently got into learning web site promotion, submission to search engines for free and online internet marketing myself. I am doing research on improving my skills in search engine optimization and placement, keyword marketing research, and pay per click management. I have made small websites where you can buy discount inkjet printer ink cartridges, cheap refill kits, laser toners for HP Epson Canon Lexmark printers and another site that sells free direct tv dish satellite network. I like to play and copy playstation and ps2 games and
copy dvds videos cds divx decss. Don’t forget to visit my site if you ever need to buy discount remanufactured ink jet cartridges, cheap refills and laser toners for HP Epson Canon Lexmark printers . Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.Good Site For Visiting!!! Keep It Up!!
