February, 2001

by Tom Spaulding

“I had a good chat with Steve on the phone last night. He told me that he would be leaving the hospital today. He has been there since December 26th. Yes, he and his family did manage to get their house decorated again with that amazing collection of Christmas balls Steve enjoys so much. Yes, the family had a fine Christmas. And no, they do not have moose meat in the hospital. And no, Steve has not developed a taste for ‘packaged food’!

“Will Steve be able to hunt again? My answer, after our conversation, would be a categorical yes! Perhaps there are some of you who do not know that Steve lost a leg (to diabetes) in a previous hospital session and has now lost a portion of his remaining foot. But I can tell you that he has lost nothing of his spirit! As soon as the pain from this recent bout has diminished sufficiently Steve will be working with the experts to re-learn how to walk. Knowing Steve as I do he probably won’t wait that long.”
