Several years ago, MNO developed the Métis Education Kit/Trousse d'éducation Métisse for use by community members presenting to classes and in other setting
(Click here for more information on the Education Kits).
The kits have been hugely popular with teachers and schools boards. As the kits were being requested more frequently, MNO wanted to find out more about how teachers were using the kits in Ontario classrooms and whether they had enough knowledge about Métis in Ontario to effectively use the material. For the first time a review of the level of Métis content in Ontario's 13 faculties of education has been produced entitled "Our Place in the Circle" (Dion 2012).
Dr Susan Dion's team at York University reviewed websites, interviewed and surveyed course directors, recent graduates, and Métis youth. Having the report is one step toward better understanding the needs of Ontario's teachers and classrooms and exploring strategies to support Métis education. The outcome of this research is now the subject of knowledge mobilization, getting the research results out in a number of ways to different audiences. Most importantly the report is available to all community members in both paper and electronic format.
The MNO is also presenting the information to the Ontario College of Teachers, Council of Ontario Universities Deans of the Faculties of Education, as well as governments and other education stakeholders. We hope you will read the report, posted on MNO website and on York University's website. If you have any questions feel free to contact:
