The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Northern Employment in Energy Project (NEEP) was a recently completed program built upon the extremely successful Employment in Energy Project funded through the Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF). NEEP is now complete and is not accepting anymore applicants. Funding for NEEP came from the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities through the Northern Training Partnership Fund and Service Canada’s Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS).
The Northern Employment in Energy Project was a partnership between the MNO and Northern College. The Project offered training-to-employment for 40 Métis, First Nations or Inuit participants who were in pursuit of careers in Ontario’s growing energy sector over two years.
The 32 week project was comprised of two parts; a Pre-Technology Certificate followed by a work placement. The Pre-Technology Certificate consisted of twelve (12) courses taught over a sixteen (16) week period at the South Porcupine Campus of Northern College. This intensive classroom learning was combined with Field Trips and hands-on “Shop” hours to better prepare the participant for the workplace.
Following the in-class program, participants took the skills and knowledge they acquired and applied them to a sixteen (16) week paid work placement. These work placements were geared towards the electricity sector career interests of the program participants. Culturally appropriate academic and workplace supports were also provided to participants in terms of mentorship, guidance and additional supports as required. Upon completion of this program, participants had an improved awareness of employment opportunities and increased knowledge of pathways to careers in the energy sector.
The MNO thanks all the employers who gave their experience and time to nurture our participants’ employment aspirations. Placement Employers were GoldCorp Mines, 5 Nations Energy Inc., Northern College, Barrick Mines, Electrical Service Solutions, Stunning Renovations, Con’s Electric, and Great White North Electrical.
