The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) in partnership with Georgian College’s School of Engineering introduced the Technology Foundations for Employment in Energy Project in May 2010. The thirty-week program includes both an academic and workplace training component and will be offered through the Barrie campus of Georgian College.
The program provides Aboriginal learners with the stepping stones required to build skills and gain the knowledge needed to realize their employment goals in the rapidly expanding and diversifying energy sector. The project is the result of a long standing and successful relationship between the MNO and Georgian College which was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in September of 2009.
The MNO successfully secured the funding for the program through the Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF). The project is expected to provide both short and long-term employment opportunities for Métis, First Nations and Inuit people in Ontario’s expanding Energy sector.
Participants who successfully complete the Technology Foundations program requirements will receive a Certificate of Achievement as well as six post-secondary credits. Four of the credits can be transferred to further studies in the School of Engineering Technology. The four-month work placement provides an opportunity for strong partnerships between participants and the energy sector to develop. The placements will also provide the student with practical entry-level experience that will increase the probability of further successful employment. In some cases, employers may keep the student on as an employee once the placement is complete.
The program is free for qualified applicants. Students may also be eligible for training allowances during their training and work placement. Culturally-appropriate academic and workplace supports will be provided to participants through mentorship, guidance and additional supports as required.
The deadline for applications is June 18 and classes begin July 5 at Georgian College’s Barrie Campus.
