In response to Ontarios expanded gambling opportunities,
the Ministry of Health funds a special Problem Gambling Project.
The MNO negotiated with that Ministry to deliver this program
to Ontarios Métis people. Within the past five
years, problem gambling has received significantly more attention
than before.
Treatment and prevention programs are in place in several
provinces, and other jurisdictions are considering similar
strategies. In Ontario, there were no programs or services
geared specifically to unique needs of Métis People
until the MNO developed an Aboriginal Voyage to Recovery Responsible
Gambling Program that meets the expressed needs of Métis
throughout the province.
The
Ontario Government dedicates 2% of the gross revenue from
slot operations at the province's charity casinos and racetracks
to a Problem Gambling Strategy. The strategy funds three key
components: treatment services delivered at 45 designated
agencies across Ontario, prevention programs and services
provided through funded agencies and research funded through
the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre. >>
