Opportunity to Assist with Aquatic Habitat
The Métis Nation of Ontario has invited interested MNO Community Councils to participate in its delivery of the Aboriginal Inland Habitat Program (AIHP). The AIHP is a federal government initiative funded by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for the MNO to assist our Community Councils in participating in local fish management and habitat activities. Through this program, the MNO is supporting interested Community Councils in initiating approved aquatic habitat projects.
This program is providing exciting opportunities for Community Councils to develop local projects involving the management of aquatic habitat. Projects such as fish habitat conservation, restoration and development are being encouraged, as well as projects that facilitate youth-elder interaction and form partnerships. Preference is being given to projects that relate directly to the Métis way of life.
There are a wide range of initiatives that relate to aquatic habitat. Does your community have a shoreline erosion problem or a waterway impediment that is preventing fish from migrating to spawning or feeding grounds? Projects can be as simple as removing debris from a creek bed or as involved as a watershed study.
