Métis Student Bursary Program

In 1998, the Metis Nation of Ontario established a bursary program, to assist Métis students in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Through the Province of Ontario's Student Opportunity Trust Fund program, the MNO made financial contributions that were matched by the Province resulting in a total endowment of 4.2 million across Ontario. At present there are 32 Colleges and Universities currently participating in the Metis Student Bursary Program (MSBP) within Ontario.

How to Apply:

Each school oversees the administration of the MSBP, as such, applications are to be made directly through the school. Generally the application can be found at the Financial Aid office, Aboriginal Student Liaison Centre, or Student Support Services and are accessible to students after registration in the fall.

MSBP Details:

The MSBP is an established Endowment Award for Métis students and the actual bursaries are paid from the interest that accumulates annually. Metis students may re-apply for the MSBP with each registered school year. Deadlines are established by each school, however, applications are generally available after fall registration and the award recipients are announced by the school in the New Year. MSBP amounts vary, depending on accumulation of interest and the administration process of the school.

MSBP Eligibility:

The MSBP was established with the goal to off-set costs of school for Metis students in financial need. If you do not already have your Metis Nation of Ontario Citizenship as supporting documentation of your Metis ancestry, you will need to meet with your local CDO to complete the MNOTI Verification Form.

Who to Contact for Additional Support:

Our MNO Training Initiatives branch has Community Development Officers (CDO) that are well versed with the overall administration of the MSBP within their region. Your local CDO is also the best point of contact to explore other funding opportunities or additional Aboriginal scholarship specific to your area.
