Métis Council
Fall
Harvest Gathering
October 20th, 2007
"The Sudbury Métis
Council Fall Harvest Gathering and Community Meeting
took place on Saturday, October 20th, 2007. This
was the third gathering since we held the first
“Gathering at the French” in October,
2004 when we were sending our “protest”
for the fact the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
(MNR) was not going to honor our agreement in
its entirety and subsequently started to charge
MNO Harvest Card Holders in our territories south
of Sudbury.
"That was then, this is
now. We won in the case of R
v. Lemieux, Lemieux and Laurin –
the court declared that our MNO/MNR
Harvesting Agreement was legally binding
on the Province and that the MNR had to honor
MNO Harvester’s Cardholders in all of our
Métis Traditional Harvesting Territories.
Now our citizens can hunt and fish for food along
the French in in Georgian Bay. What a change for
everyone which is reflected in the great mood
at this year’s event. The community freezer
is already full of moose. Our citizens are
harvesting their meat and fish for the winter
without a threat of being charged – for
the first time in their lives. What a great feeling!"
