President Tony Belcourt has made his way to Taiwan to attend the Austronesian Forum as a special guest of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan.
President Belcourt will be sitting on a panel to discuss “Fundamentals for Implementing the Métis Inherent Right of Self-Government and the Critical Importance of Building Relationships based on Traditional Ways through Modern Treaties.”
In his presentation, President Belcourt will explain the historic context of the Métis Nation in terms of its relationships with other Aboriginal peoples and governments. He will relate the importance and outcomes of the “Nation to Nation” relationship the Métis Nation of Ontario has with the Anishenabek Nation, which is forged in a traditional way.
He will provide an overview of the Supreme Court of Canada’s Decision in R v. Powley, its impact in support of our aspirations to develop appropriate relationships with the federal and provincial governments through agreements (modern treaties) and through future required legislation.
He will also discuss the positive impacts of Powley and other jurisprudence such as the “Duty to Consult” in our aspirations to preserve our way of life, our regard for Mother Earth and our goals to develop our economies in conjunction with other communities.
