The Role

The Acting Specialist, Advocacy Projects reports to the Supervisor of Advocacy.

The Acting Specialist will be accountable for developing and implementing a legal support resource manual within the MNO for staff and Métis communities while also being responsible for developing and implementing Métis specific education, resources, tools and programs for communities and frontline staff to support their work.  This will include the development of resource manuals in various areas of law, such as Canadian criminal procedure, Ontario family court rules, etc.  Further, the Acting Specialist will develop strategies for outreach, education and engagement to promote access to justice for Métis communities.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Conduct program and project evaluation using a variety of research and evaluation tools
  2. Collaborate with others to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a program
  3. Evaluate projects and assess impact in order to secure longer term funding or other supports
  4. Utilize specialized knowledge to meet program, Branch and organizational needs
  5. Analyze processes, procedures, programs and other systems, and collect data useful to identify opportunities for additional impact or improvement
  6. Collaborate with others to facilitate successful implementation of new programs
  7. Promote, track, and measure compliance with program funding requirements by creating and implementing appropriate data collection, reporting, and/or recordkeeping processes
  8. Other reasonable duties as may be assigned
  9. Deal with confidential and sensitive issues in a timely manner, with tact and discretion

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • A post-secondary degree in justice, social work, or a related field
  • A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment
  • Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Strong project coordination, including the design and implementation of project work-plans
  • Superior organization skills
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing demands and assess changing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to assess situations and problem-solve independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated experience in a related field

Preferred

  • Completion of a Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Knowledge of Métis-specific and broader indigenous policy and research, key challenges, and programs
  • Previous 2 years or more experience in a similar/comparable role
  • Demonstrated ability to write high quality evidence and data-based reports and professional presentations
  • Demonstrated ability in policy and program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire and expand knowledge and to be flexible in a demanding and dynamic environment
  • Previous experience dealing with confidential information
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset
