The Role

Under the direction of the Managers in Lands, Resources and Consultations (LRC) Branch, the Consultation Advisor will work directly to implement MNO’s consultation framework and regional consultation protocols, relating to the Crown’s Duty to Consult, comply, and Accommodate Indigenous peoples. The prime objective of the Consultation Advisor is to support the work of the elected leadership of the Regional Consultation Committees, by processing consultation requests, producing research and briefings about proposed developments within their traditional territories, and organizing community information sessions to inform and engage with Métis citizens.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the LRC Branch and Regional Consultation Committees (RCCs) on a variety of projects, issues and initiatives, which may impact Métis community rights, interests and way of life. Duties include, but are not limited to, research, liaising and reporting, maintaining communication and relationships with proponents, organizations and governments in region.
  • Plan and execute engagement activities with RCCs and MNO Citizens, such as consultation meetings, site tours and community information sessions etc. Duties include, but are not limited to, scheduling, confirming budgets, booking venues/catering, preparation of expense forms, purchase orders, agendas, briefing notes and leading meetings with RCCs, proponents, government officials, and MNO communities.
  • Maintain a thorough record of all activities and consultations associated with projects, relevant issues and initiatives.
  • Travel to communities to participate in, and present at meetings.  This may require overnight stays in communities, long-distance driving, air travel and a varied work schedule include work during week-ends and evenings.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff of the LRC Branch, including the MNO Community Relations Unit and the MNO Way of Life Unit and the MNO Education and Training Branch on assigned projects, initiatives and issues. Collaborative work to improve processes and standards within the LRC Branch is expected.

Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a relevant field such as Indigenous studies, planning, geography, or environmental studies
  • 1-3 years’ experience in community or indigenous relations, project management, or natural resources, environmental sectors or Indigenous legal, policy and research.
  • An understanding of the impact assessment process, environmental issues and Indigenous rights
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized
  • Experience working in community engagement and event planning an asset
