The Role

The prime objective of the Consultation Advisor/Specialist in the Lands, Resources and Consultations (LRC) Branch of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is to provide support to the LRC Branch and the Regional Consultation Committees (RCCs) in relation to the MNO’s consultations on nuclear energy projects that are regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), including projects which may impact Métis community rights, interests and way of life. The Consultation Advisor/Specialist will support the MNO’s consultation framework and regional consultation protocols and processes relating to the Crown’s Duty to Consult and Accommodate Indigenous peoples.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support to the LRC Branch in relation to the MNO’s engagement and consultation, particularly on CNSC regulated nuclear projects.
  • Liaise directly with MNO leadership in relation to engagement and consultation on CNSC regulated nuclear projects, including providing technical support and advice.
  • Coordinate and execute engagement and consultation activities with the RCCs and the MNO community, including organizing and facilitating engagement/consultation meetings, site tours and community information sessions etc.
  • Prepare agendas, briefings, briefing notes, reports and presentations and lead meetings with RCCs, proponents, government officials, and MNO communities.
  • Develop communication plans, including the development of content, and plain speak communication tools, such as mail outs, website ads, and other communications for the Métis Community related to projects.
  • Oversee and engage in research that is undertaken to support MNOs participation in nuclear related consultation and engagements
  • Collaborate with the CNSC and nuclear proponents, government contacts, project consultants, and others, including internal to MNO, such as Education and Training, for matters related to community engagement, employment, training, business and economic development opportunities, and capacity building related to the project.
  • Track and maintain detailed records related to activities and deliverables, such as:
    • Meetings attended with communities, dates and locations;
    • Meetings attended with other organizations, dates and locations;
    • Issues discussed;
    • List and description of initiatives that have been undertaken/addressed;
    • Training undertaken by the Advisor/Specialist;
    • Act as point of contact in office for community engagement;
    • Provide regular updates to the external project team via summary reports and teleconference meetings; and
    • Travel to communities for meetings with proponents and/or community members as directed.


  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Completion of post-secondary education in fields of environmental studies, environmental sciences, earth sciences, environmental engineering, resource development, nuclear safety or a related area, or equivalent experience.
    1-3 years’ experience in natural resources, environmental sectors or Indigenous legal, policy and research especially in respect of the federal and/or provincial government; some government policy or program experience is preferred.
  • An understanding of regulatory processes, nuclear energy, environmental issues and Indigenous issues or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about these and other processes and issues quickly.
