Who we are:
In 1993, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) was established through the will of Métis people and Métis communities coming together throughout Ontario to create a Métis-specific governance structure and vision, encapsulated in the Statement of Prime Purpose.
Today, the Métis Nation of Ontario has built a province-wide governance structure which includes: an objectively verifiable, centralized registry of over 20,000 Métis citizens; approximately 31 Chartered Community Councils across the province which represent Métis citizens at the local level; a provincial governing body that is elected by ballot box every four years; an Annual General Assembly where regional and provincial Métis leaders are required to report back to Métis citizens yearly between elections; a charitable foundation which promotes and support Métis culture and heritage (Métis Nation of Ontario Cultural Commission); and an economic development arm (Métis Voyageur Development Fund).
In addition, the Métis Nation of Ontario has built an accountable, results-based provincial delivery structure to meet the socio-economic needs of its citizens and communities. Currently, the MNO delivers programs and services to its citizens through these branches: Healing and Wellness; Education and Training; Housing; Lands, Resources and Consultation; Intergovernmental and Community Relations; Self-Government and Registry. Through these various branches, the MNO maintains 30+ service delivery access points across the province, administers over $50 million annually, and employs about 300 personnel across the province.

The Director, Healing and Wellness (H&W) develops and directs the activities of the Branch, including establishing goals and objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the Branch; prepares and administers the H&W Branch budgets, including determining staffing needs; and approves and monitors Branch expenditures. The Director, H&W reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
The hiring of this role reflects the dramatic growth of the Métis Nation of Ontario, and the renewed focus on sustainable program delivery. This position requires a strategic, innovative and inspirational team leader who will provide direction to the Branch management team. The H&W programs include: Aboriginal Diabetes Education, Aging At Home, Community Support Services; and Métis Family Well-Being.
The Director is accountable for achieving Branch goals and objectives and for furthering MNO goals and objectives within policy guidelines. The Director is also responsible for creating an engaging and effective workplace culture and fostering a healthy and safe workplace. This includes managing and coaching employees, fostering a climate of continuous improvement, mitigating risk, and maintaining the integrity of programs, based on funding agreements.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Ensuring that the MNO’s Statement of Prime Purpose is reflected in the goals and objectives, policies, procedures and work standards of the Branch, in accordance with MNO policy, the strategic plan, and Statement of Prime Purpose.
- Ensuring accountability and transparency, specifically to MNO funders, in the development, design, monitoring and evaluation of projects and programs.
- Preparing and administering the Branch’s budget, ensuring appropriate systems and procedures are followed in order to provide financial oversight and budgetary control.
- Overseeing and managing the Branch activities and related initiatives, including managing staff, external contractors or consultants.
- Developing, implementing and evaluating Branch procedures and policies and recommending, reviewing, evaluating and approving Branch documents, briefs and reports.
- Establishing and maintaining Branch files in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements, including privacy laws.
- Establishing and maintaining positive, collaborative and productive working relationships with other Branches, leadership, clients, citizens, external contractors and funders.
- Ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with established Métis Nation of Ontario Policies and Procedures and Contribution Agreements (CA).
- Ensuring deadlines are met and procedures are followed as outlined by funders and / or MNO.
- Acting as an advocate on behalf of MNO when directed.
- Attending and participating in the Annual General Assembly (MNO Policy 4.040).
- Providing direction for the selection, training, development and evaluation of professional, office support and operational staff of over 80 people.
- Leading a culture of quality and service by prioritizing and allocating available resources and reviewing and evaluating program and service delivery.
- Creating a healthy and safe work environment.
Research and Policy
- Monitoring changes in laws, regulations, and technology that may affect Branch operations, and implementing policy and procedural changes as required.
- Developing, reviewing and implementing policies and procedures to meet legislated requirements, MNO needs and the Branch goals and objectives.
- Overseeing preparation of periodic and special reports, procedures, policies and other materials.
- Preparing and delivering presentations to a variety of audiences.
- Serving on the management team, and attending meetings and conferences, ensuring the CWB Branch needs and concerns are represented.
- Participating in strategic planning for the MNO.
- Conferring with and representing the Branch and the MNO in meetings with various government agencies and the public.
- Liaising and establishing linkages with provincial organizations, and government program representatives as directed.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes:
- Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold Métis rights and culture
- Significant knowledge of Métis and/or Indigenous rights and policy issues and principles or a demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge
- Robust, effective leadership and management skills, including demonstrated skill to work collaboratively using a team-based approach.
- Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with a wide variety of government partners and internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of government processes and protocol, in the public health or mental health sector, at the provincial and federal level.
- Significant skill and experience speaking to a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated alignment with MNO’s Standards of Professional Conduct.
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to all relevant employment related legislation, including privacy laws, and to respect confidential information.
- A high degree of digital literacy, including demonstrated knowledge of MS Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours (including weekends as required) and travel throughout Ontario.
- Knowledge of the Métis and/or Indigenous policy issues, or demonstrated ability to quickly acquire and expand their knowledge of Métis specific matters is a definite asset.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor degree in Health Sciences or a related field, from a recognized university or college, and a minimum of 5-7 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Post-graduate degree in Health Sciences, Counselling or Public Health Administration, Business Administration or equivalent is preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of management experience.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic approaches within organizations through effective policy development, collaboration and working in partnership with government and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced multi-issue environment, serving a wide range of varied internal and external interests.
