The Role

As a subject matter expert, the Early Learning Documentation Specialist will be responsible for: Working with the Managers and Supervisors of ELCC to develop visual and print documentation that emphasizes grounded Métis-led early learning pedagogy, that is developmentally appropriate and upholds standards of practice.

The Early Learning Documentation Specialist will be responsible for developing resources, presentations, and extensions to ELCC documentation that connect to inquiry-based learning and utilize foundational early learning documents.

The documentation specialist will work with ELCC Programs & Services teams to provide documentation expertise for projects and programs. The specialist will attend meetings as needed, to plan, review and discuss proposed documentation projects.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

ELCC Mixed Media and Print Documentation:

  1. Work with ELCC staff on the development of Early Learning print resources through traditional and alternative print solutions.
  2. Development of resources can include but is not limited to photographing and/or scanning creative submissions, designing the layout and fit of creative materials for print, bleeds, and typesetting, and ensuring consistent formatting, font styles, and colouring.
  3. Work within complex design software and processes to ensure MNO ELCC print materials meet industry standards.
  4. Work in collaboration with MNO printing partners on the design and printing of ELCC developed resources.
  5. Determine design processes and standards to ensure the consistent design of developed resources while working within MNO design frameworks.
  6. Provide design and formatting recommendations to ELCC staff on the development of resources to be shared virtually across MNO ELCC Programs and Services.
  7. Develop required consent/media liability release documents for mixed media and print materials.
  8. Provide documentation expertise to ELCC staff on what is required for the design of print documents providing considerations to enhance the development of resources.
  9. Meet with ELCC staff to review documentation projects, and provide strategic considerations for future documentation.
  10. Work in collaboration with ELCC Specialists to develop a standardized process for all of ELCC to follow, ensuring that all documentation opportunities remain consistent across ELCC.
  11. Work with the MNO Languages Team to include Key Michif words and French Translations for Resources when applicable.
  12. Work in collaboration with ELCC Specialists to support the development of online learning opportunities, including the adaptation of print materials into virtual interactive mediums.
  13. Interactive resources will include but are not limited to: virtual read-a-louds of ELCC books, animated functions to enhance interactivity, and ensuring digital content is accessible across multi-media platforms.
  14. Work with MNO’s Communication team as needed, to create content for the MNO Website and Social Media platforms.
  15. Cross-collaborate with MNO-wide initiatives (i.e, The Powley Institute), to enhance the accessibility of ELCC resources to the broader Métis community.
  16. Attend meetings as needed, to plan, review and discuss proposed documentation projects.

Documentation Archive and Inventory:

  1. Develop an ELCC archive within MNO’s secure storage system for all drafts of creative content and completed documentation of projects.
  2. The archive will include a library of resources that have been developed and will contain all raw data and completed projects for future development, including:
    • All raw creative material collected from participants;
    • Draft versions of virtual and print materials; and
    • All completed projects
  3. Develop, maintain, and monitor an equipment inventory. Equipment required for the inventory includes physical equipment (cameras, tripods, high-resolution scanners, and lighting rings) and digital equipment (Adobe Creative Suite and other virtual design/editing software).
  4. Determine secure storage and maintenance for all equipment. Create and maintain a maintenance checklist to ensure equipment remains in good condition.

Required Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary graduate of visual arts, web/print design, or media studies, or applicable experience.
  • Ability to develop work plans and timelines independently.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Time priority management to guide program delivery and resource development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated to motivate and work effectively with others.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality documentation in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Works well under pressure and requires minimal supervision.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite and other visual design programs.
  • Previous experience with working publishing and working with print companies.
  • Web design experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years working with multimedia platforms.
  • 3-5 years experience with:
    • Photography
    • Graphic design
    • Web design
    • Multimedia editing
  • Ability to oversee a project from concept to the finished product
  • Develop creative ideas and concepts to meet MNO ELCC objectives.
  • Strong understanding of media software for editing and modification i.e. Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong understanding of multimedia for print materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of historical, cultural, and contemporary Metis perspectives.
  • Ability to work within planned deliverables and timelines.
  • Strong working knowledge of foundational ELCC documents which include:

  • Indigenous Early Learning Framework
  • Think, Feel, Act in the Early Years
  • Strong multimedia skills for different target audiences.
  • Creativity and ambition with and desire to learn to develop knowledge and skills.
  • Insuring consistency in style, tone, messaging, and quality to enhance projects and branding.
  • Experience in the organization of documentation materials for archive and future resource development.
  • Experience in designing and developing early learning print resources.
  • Experience/understanding in copyright and ISBN processes.
  • Experience in scanning, designing and formatting resources for print.
  • Ability to adapt print materials to other multimedia formats.
  • Manage multiple projects in various stages of production concurrently.
