Who we are

In 1993, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) was established through the will of Métis people and Métis communities coming together throughout Ontario to create a Métis-specific governance structure and vision, encapsulated in the Statement of Prime Purpose.

Today, the Métis Nation of Ontario has built a province-wide governance structure which includes: an objectively verifiable, centralized registry of over 20,000 Métis citizens; approximately 31 Chartered Community Councils across the province which represent Métis citizens at the local level; a provincial governing body that is elected by ballot box every four years; an Annual General Assembly where regional and provincial Métis leaders are required to report back to Métis citizens yearly between elections; a charitable foundation which promotes and support Métis culture and heritage (Métis Nation of Ontario Cultural Commission); and an economic development arm (Métis Voyageur Development Fund).

In addition, the Métis Nation of Ontario has built an accountable, results-based provincial delivery structure to meet the socio-economic needs of its citizens and communities. Currently, the MNO delivers programs and services to its citizens through these branches: Healing and Wellness; Education and Training; Housing; Lands, Resources and Consultation; Intergovernmental and Community Relations; Self-Government and Registry. Through these various branches, the MNO maintains 30+ service delivery access points across the province, administers over $50 million annually, and employs about 300 personnel across the province.

The Role:

The Federal Advisor will review, assess, monitor and analyze all federal government environmental and resource-development-related consultation issues, activities and related matters and provide strategic policy and related technical advice as well as research with respect to Métis consultation including, but not limited to, matters arising from federal/provincial relations and all agreements as well as Memoranda of Understanding between the Métis Nation of Ontario and the Government of Canada.

  • Assist in arranging and participating as a subject matter expert in community meetings and community information sessions.
  • Provide community feedback and responses in respect of relevant Project documents and the consultation process.
  • Prepare presentations on federal government resource-development-related issues and policies to be used in community and other related information sessions.
  • Draft briefing notes, policy papers, research papers, proposals and business cases.
  • Conduct research as required by project directives and prepare briefing notes, papers, memoranda and other documents.
  • Review and analyze federal government-related lands, resources and consultations-related policies and legislation, regulations and all related matters (e.g., climate change, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, Environment Canada, Parks Canada, IAAC, CNSC, NEB, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Natural Resources Canada etc.).
  • Assist in the formulation of responses to the government and proponents.
  • Assist with Project Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) Guidelines and Federal Environmental Assessments under the Impact Assessment Act and Terms of Reference.
  • Assist with, and provide expertise for, MNO Valued Components Workshops to discuss results of baseline data and effects assessment methodology, including the incorporation of a Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Studies.
  • Develop communication plans for the project, including the development of content, and plain speak communication tools, such as mail outs, website ads, and other communications for the Métis Community related to the project
  • Track and maintain detailed records related to activities and deliverables, such as:
    • Meetings attended with communities, dates and locations;
    • Meetings attended with other organizations, dates and locations;
    • Issues discussed;
    • List and description of initiatives that have been undertaken/addressed;
    • Training undertaken by the Advisor; and
    • General outcomes
  • Provide regular updates to the external project team via summary reports and teleconference meetings.
  • Please note, successful candidates will be given latitude and even encouraged to consider assisting with other MNO projects that may be outside the scope of this position.
Mandatory Qualifications
  • Completion of post-secondary education in environmental sciences or resource development or a related area, or equivalent experience; a Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in natural resources or environmental sectors or Indigenous legal, policy and research especially in respect of the federal government; some government policy or program experience is preferred.
  • An understanding of regulatory processes, environmental issues and Indigenous issues or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about these and other processes and issues quickly.
All positions at the MNO may require the following:
  1. Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain
  2. Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Verification
  3. A reliable vehicle (or ability to rent), driver’s licence, $1,000,000 liability insurance, and a clean driving record
  4. Flexibility to work extended hours as necessary
  5. Ability to occasionally travel and stay at remote locations for limited periods of time
