The Role

The Region and Community Council Finance Liaison role supports the Regions and Community Councils of the Metis Nation of Ontario in the development of fiscal management capacity. The tasks require a high degree of focus, attention to detail, analysis and problem solving. An accounting degree or diploma is required or alternatively significant relevant experience. This role has a moderate to high level of independent decision-making authority within established processes and procedures and pre-set generally accepted accounting principles.

The Finance Region and Community Council Liaison supports the Regions and Community Councils of the Metis Nation of Ontario in the development of fiscal management capacity.Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Liaison will rely upon the history, structure, financial policies and future direction of the Metis Nation of Ontario to provide an effective resource for the decentralized structure of the MNO.

The Liaison will be responsible for developing a relationship with Regional and Council leadership in close co-operation with Community Relations and Self Government staff. The Liaison will offer training in the areas of fiscal management. This training will include the presentation of training materials developed by the Finance Branch. The Liaison will also respond to questions and concerns by conducting the relevant research, obtaining guidance from senior Finance staff and consulting with other MNO staff. The Liaison may also offer support to councils seeking funding for special projects.

The Liaison will also assist with procuring bookkeeping services. Working with the Information Technology team, the Liaison will develop secure methods for receiving and transmitting financial information. Reporting on a regular scheduled basis will include reporting (but is not limited to) on investments, bank accounts and funds held in trust for Regions or Councils.

Coordinate and support required MNO and external funder reports (i.e., grant funding reports). Support and assist with Excel based account analyses and reports for review and discussion.As the members of Community Councils are volunteers, meetings and workshops are frequently conducted outside regular work hours, the Liaison will be expected to attend and flex their time.  Meetings and workshops should be conducted online whenever possible and the Liaison will not be expected to travel extensively.

Qualifications

  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Post-secondary education in a related field (i.e. Accounting Practices)
  • High degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment (with preferred expertise in Microsoft Excel and Great Plains or equivalent accounting system)
  • Superior organization skills and time/priority-management
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • 2-3 years related experience
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with confidential information

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of DataBasics (or similar software)
  • Bilingual (French/English)
  • Previous experience in a project accounting based role
  •  Knowledge of Indigenous Governments and History, specifically the Métis
  • Experience in adult education
