The Ministry of Health supported Indigenous partners to engage with their communities and membership through a dedicated engagement process on mental health and addictions (MHA). During these engagements, the ministry heard from Indigenous partners and providers that improved system coordination in the mental health sector is a key priority and unmet need. Subsequently, the MNO’s Indigenous Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) System Coordinator will be working with the organization and other coordinators to help to improve service pathways, client journeys, and coordination between providers serving Indigenous communities, clients and families.
This will be carried out by the MNO’s Indigenous MHA System Coordinator working in collaboration with MNO’s Mental Health and Addictions Program within the Healing and Wellness Branch to facilitate the following:
- Develop recommendations and planning activities that could support greater coordination across the system;
- Support engagements with communities and service provider organizations to gather information to improve client pathways through the use of wise practices to achieve positive MHA outcomes for Métis individuals, families and communities; and,
- Participate in a provincial network of System Coordinators to identify and compare trends, service delivery gaps, and coordination of models and programs
In carrying out the following duties, it is expected that the successful candidate will:
- Fully understand the significance and fundamental importance of the Métis Nation of Ontario Statement of Prime Purpose (SPP) to all MNO’s work, and to the requirements of the position specifically
- Adhere to MNO Policies and Procedures and MNO’s Financial Policies and Procedures Uphold MNO’s Standards of Professional Conduct
- Adhere to Privacy Laws and respect confidential information
- The employee must be cognizant of the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workers’ Safety and Insurance Board, Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Human Rights Act, and other legislative provisions governing the employment relationship between MNO and the employee
- Work in collaboration with administrative supports within the branch, and with other MNO branches as required
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Reviewing and analyzing existing services to streamline service navigation
- Developing and creating an environmental cross-analysis of systems that support Indigenous women in mental health and addictions and judicial systems locally and across Ontario
- Developing, revising policies, processes and procedures to ensure comprehensive service delivery
- Working collaboratively with the provincial network of Indigenous System Coordinators across Ontario
- Supporting communication and information exchange among internal and external stakeholders
- Acting as a conduit for health system information to frontline MHA workers;
- Identifying gaps, barriers, challenges and success to improve coordination across the MHA system in multi-sectoral approaches
- Establishing linkages with Ontario Health, Indigenous Health Planning entities and Ontario Health Teams
- To liaise with Ontario Health Teams to identify areas to improve service pathways, program participant/patient journeys and coordination between MHA service providers serving Métis communities.
- Post-secondary qualifications in one of the following areas:
- Social Work
- Public Policy and Administration
- Political Science
- Humanities; and
- Other (to be assessed in combination with full application)
- Experience working with Indigenous individuals, families and communities;
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture and traditions;
- Working knowledge of Ontario’s current health system/structure (and associated impact for Métis Health and Well Being);
- Context re: First Nation, Inuit and Métis (FNIM) peoples including:
- Commonalities and differences between these communities;
- Ability to identify opportunities to collaborate with FNIM communities to create/enhance MNO’s supports/services
- Commitment to remain informed and seek out provincial/federal legislation/policies that may have an impact the health and wellbeing of Métis;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to:
- Prepare detailed, succinct briefing notes, legislative and other summaries as required;
- Engage Métis individuals, families and communities province wide in various settings in a respectable manner;
- Liaise with key actors in the health system with commitment to the MNO’s Statement of Prime Purpose, and with the ultimate goal of achieving optimal health and wellbeing for Métis individuals, families and Citizens.
