The Role

The Indigenous Justice Liaison Worker will provide Métis communities public legal information and education sessions on topics relevant to Indigenous, particularly Métis, communities.  This will include education on the jury system and other relevant legal area.  In turn, this position will also be relating Justice concerns of Métis communities to appropriate government and community agencies.  Accountable to liaise with Métis communities including with relevant service providers, including victims services, bail supervision services, and youth services and deliver Métis grounded cultural competency training sessions to justice system workers in Sault Ste. Marie and MNO’s northern service areas.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

This position reports directly to the Manager, Mental Health and Addictions.

 In carrying out the following duties, it is expected that the Justice Coordinator will:

  • Fully understand the significance and fundamental importance of MNO’s Statement of Prime Purpose to all MNO’s work, and to the requirements of the position specifically
  • Adhere to MNO Policies and Procedures and MNO’s Financial Policies and Procedures and all other applicable policy
  • Comply with and model MNO’s Standards of Professional Conduct
  • Adhere to all applicable privacy law and respect confidential information at all times
  • Be cognizant of and compliant at all times with the MNO workplace Policies and Procedures, the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and other legislative and policy provisions governing the MNO workplace
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with established Métis Nation of Ontario Policies and Procedures and transfer payment/contribution agreements
  • Work in collaboration within the Healing & Wellness branch, other MNO branches, MNO leadership, MNO citizens and MNO contractors and consultants on related projects
  • Act as an advocate on behalf of the MNO
  • Attend the Annual General Assembly (MNO Policy 2.120) and MNO public service training as directed.

The incumbent is responsible for the following items, as well as other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Designated Approving Authority:

 Program Development

  • To develop and deliver educational and marketing materials for the program
  • Networking in the northern Métis communities and with the relevant partners
  • Organize and execute public events
  • Work well under pressure
  • Manage program budgets and produce financial and activity reports to the Manager
  • Implement annual project work plans and activity reports
  • Proposal development for new initiatives as required
  • Develop new collaborations and partnerships as required

Administrative/Operational Duties

  • Keep up-to-date records on spending and accounting for the program
  • Provide bi-weekly reports to the Manager

Qualifications

  • Completed Post-Secondary education in related field is preferred; however, a minimum of 2 years’ experience in providing social support services to clients in an Indigenous, preferably Métis, setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of Indigenous issues, specifically as it relates to Métis peoples  and the current legal system is an asset
  • Knowledge of the legal system and programs and services available to Indigenous people in the Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario regions
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate assertiveness, self-starter and being self-motivated
  • Proficiency with computer programs (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Experience with program development and management
  • Knowledge of the Métis Nation of Ontario governance, programs and services
  • Effective communicator and time management skills, ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deliverables within deadlines
  • Successful completion and maintenance of a Police Security Check
  • Ability to work extended hours or on weekends as required
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness and ability to travel, at times extended stays in location other than place of residence
