The Role

The Navigator/Advisor’s primary role is to use their specialized knowledge of mental health services and supports to create effective links between appropriate mental health and addictions services, and social and community resources.  The Navigator/Advisor is a specialized resource who assists in supporting MNO’s client-facing staff in the care planning for their adult, youth and child clients by connecting clients to the most appropriate service provider and liaising with other parts of the health care and community support system within the Province.  Ultimately, the Navigator/Advisor supports MNO’s ability to connect clients to appropriate Mental Health and Addictions services and supports that are client/family centered, wholistic in nature, focused on prevention, promotion and early intervention, and firmly rooted in Métis traditions and cultural values within their respective communities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be available to MNO’s staff to consult and support regarding Mental Health and Addictions resources available for their client(s)
  • Provide MNO’s staff with information to help them navigate the mental health and addictions system on behalf of clients using existing databases and available community information
  • Assist with the development and documentation of available province-wide Mental Health and Addictions supports and services, particularly those oriented to the support of Indigenous, First Nations and Metis peoples
  • Actively and independently keep up-to-date on mental health and addictions services and community supports available throughout Ontario
  • Manage the intake and track progress of clients through MH&A services
  • Liaise with other MNO mental health services and supports on cases
  • Develop a communication strategy, including education and awareness-building materials, required to support Navigator/Advisor services, and to encourage client-facing staff to identify and also self-identification of Indigenous, First Nations and Metis who would benefit from services and supports
  • Build awareness about the Navigator/Advisor role internally with MNO client-service staff by actively networking and connecting to support existing clients
  • Build awareness about the Navigator/Advisor role with regional Métis Community Councils throughout Ontario, other service providers and relevant community partners
  • Develop strategic collaborative partnerships within the community and with other partner organizations throughout Ontario
  • Conduct outreach via attending meetings, hosting presentations, hosting gatherings, and public information sessions and events
  • Maintain accurate records and reports, and conduct program evaluation activities
  • Maintain accurate records on spending and accounting for the program
  • Manage program budgets and produce bi-weekly financial and activity reports
  • Implement annual project work plans and activity reports
  • Other reasonable duties as may be assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Registration with a provincial governing body (for certain roles)
  • Strong working knowledge of the Mental Health and Addictions supports an system for adults, youth or children, as well as relevant community partners involved with these populations
  • Knowledge of the mental health supports, system, programs and services available to Indigenous, First Nations and Metis peoples throughout Ontario
  • Knowledge of the most effective way to navigate mental health supports, system, programs and services resources to assist clients and communities throughout Ontario
  • High degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment including Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe and other software
  • Highly proficient in electronic client records management (OHATS)
  • Knowledge of FIPPA and PIPEDA legislation
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills
  • Superior organization skills and time/priority-management
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workflow when faced with various conflicting priorities
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Must be able to successfully complete and maintain a clear Criminal Record Check
  • Ability to work extended hours or on weekends as required
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness and ability to travel, at times, with overnight stays in other communities

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in the field of mental health and addictions preferably with clients in an Indigenous, preferably Métis, setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of Indigenous issues, specifically as it relates to Métis people, and the current mental health and addictions system, is an asset
  • Experience dealing with confidential information
  • Experience working in coordinating and delivering programs and/or services
