The Role

The MNO Patient Advocate will strengthen the long-term health and wellness of Métis patients and communities in a culturally safe and appropriate manner. Through an environmental scan of available research, policy and program information the Patient Advocate will be equipped to provide direct support to MNO front line Coordinators assisting clients with specific presenting concerns or barriers in the health services systems. The position will gather information about system gaps, barriers, challenges and successes from MNO front line workers; and provide information and advice to inform research, policy, programs and training aimed at advancing improved health service experiences for Métis individuals, families and communities.  Surrounded by experienced MNO front line Coordinators, and, with regular interaction with Métis communities province wide, the Patient Advocate will be well-positioned to uphold culturally safe and appropriate standards to be fully cognizant of the culture, history and traditions of Métis individuals, families and communities whom they will be serving.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • To liaise with front line Coordinators to provide information and advice on navigation of the various health systems
  • To provide MNO advice on areas of research, policy, programs and training units identifying areas gaps, barriers, challenges for improvement to health service pathways, as well as successes in health systems Métis communities access
  • To support communication and information exchange among internal and external stakeholders
  • To act as a conduit for health system information to frontline Coordinator
  • To liaise with Ontario Health Teams to identify areas to improve service pathways, program participant/patient journeys and coordination between Health Systems service providers serving Métis communities
  • Keep team members informed about rules, regulations, policies, and objectives;
  • Maintain detailed and accurate work records;
  • Collaborate with the H&W team to identify ways to improve program or Branch effectiveness and seeks approval to implements viable ideas;
  • Lead team involvement in a variety of internal and external health service system partnerships;
  • Support the development, distribution and orientation to a variety of health service system tools and resources for existing program coordinators;
  • Other reasonable duties as may be assigned.


  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Understanding of key health service systems including knowledge of major factors which contribute to gaps, challenges and barriers to access for Métis people
  • A post-secondary degree in Social Services field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment
  • Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Superior organization skills and time/priority-management managing self and others including the design and implementation of project work plans
  • Elevated levels of problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others as a peer leader on a team
  • Demonstrated understanding of policies, processes, practices and documentation used to deliver program services or the Branch mandate
  • Previous 2 years or more experience in a similar/comparable role
  • Previous experience dealing with confidential information
  • Demonstrated ability to leading a peer group to complete a task, deliverable or project
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire and expand knowledge and to be flexible when leading in a demanding and dynamic environment


  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Knowledge of Métis-specific and broader indigenous key challenges, and programs
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate / leverage the skills of a team to complete assigned tasks and deliverables
