The Role

Under the direction of the Manager of Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) the purpose of the Supervisor is to oversee all ELCC advisory and infrastructure projects. Provide and support the sharing of MNO information and culturally appropriate resources to foster stronger collaborative relationships and enhance partnership building locally between the MNO and municipalities, organizations and other potential early learning and child care partners and service providers across the province. Provide ongoing support, guidance and leadership in the development of ELCC infrastructure projects, ensuring continuous information is shared and timelines are met.

This position will work in collaboration with the entire Education and Training (E&T) management team as a primary participant in the development of project work plans and partnering budgets.  The Supervisor is responsible for promoting a health and safety culture at the MNO, handling employee relations issues, including but not limited to, attendance, absenteeism and accommodations. Provide varying supports for all team members to ensure compliance to all MNO policies and procedures and ensuring work plan goals are met.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Fully understand the significance and fundamental importance of MNO’s Statement of Prime Purpose (SPP) to all MNO’s work, and to the requirements of the position specifically
  • Adhere to MNO Policies and Procedures, MNO’s Financial Policies and Procedures at all times and Contribution Agreements (CA)
  • Uphold MNO’s Standards of Professional Conduct at all times
  • Adhere to Privacy Laws and respect confidential information at all times
  • The Supervisor must be cognizant of the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workers’ Safety and Insurance Board, Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Human Rights Act, and other legislative provisions governing the employment relationship between MNO and the employee
  • Work in collaboration within the Branch, other MNO branches, MNO leadership, MNO citizens, MNO contractors and consultants on related projects

The incumbent is responsible for the following items, as well as other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the People Leader:

Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Will oversee and manage ELCC advisor and infrastructure projects.
  • Hire and train new team members.
  • Provide training on work culture, work expectations, job duties and organizational policies and procedures or arrange for proper training to be provided
  • Act as a role model for the behaviour and culture expected from the team
  • Provide ongoing coaching to support effective job performance and conduct constructive and timely performance evaluations at least once per year
  • Implement coaching and corrective performance plans where required
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
  • Organize, plan, and supervise all functions of their employees.
  • Keep team members informed about rules, regulations, policies, and objectives.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, filing, and storage of records in case of audits.
  • Collaborate with the team to identify ways to improve department effectiveness; implements viable ideas.
  • Resolve conflicts that arise among team members and/or other employees.
  • Hold additional Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities as required by law.

Advisory Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an effective spokesperson for the organization: represent the programs and point of view of the organization to funders, politicians, donors, other organizations, and the general public
  • Collaborate with management team to prepare supporting documents and action plans required to enhance partnership building locally between the MNO and service providers, municipalities, organizations and other potential partners as required, to support the organizational goals
  • Collaborate with management team to help build relationships with education providers, comment and contribute to curricula where possible, advocate for Métis ECE’s, and share MNO ELCC materials, information, and programming
  • Ensure Manager of Early Learning and Child Care is briefed on important client, staff, volunteer and community related matters immediately
  • Inform Manager of Early Learning and Child Care of training and/or presentation requests and recommendations
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Early Learning and Child Care to prepare quarterly reports for regional work plan activities
  • Identify gaps in regional work plans and recommend activity to support the gaps
  • Work with E & T management team to prepare yearly Annual Submissions and reports for programs.

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Ensure employee time off requests are managed in a timely manner is completed appropriately, as well as provide assistance with employee and program expense claims
  • Work with E&T management team to prepare the information needed for Finance branch to set up accurate program budgets, budget lines and amounts as per our funding agreements.
  • Work with Education and Training Manager(s) to develop appropriate tools to support front line struggling with internal financial processes and/or procedures.
  • Conduct monthly budget reviews and report back to Manager of Early Learning and Child Care

Qualifications

Required

  • Knowledge of Metis Nation of Ontario governance structure, culture, history and way of life.
  • Practical knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years sector and current issues
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in early learning and child care or related field
  • A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment and software
  • Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively liaise with the ELCC team, MNO leadership, management, government and external child care organizations and agencies
  • Superior organization skills and time/priority-management managing others including the design and implementation of project work plans
  • Elevated levels of problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead and work effectively with others in a supervisory capacity, with an ability to solve conflict if required
  • Demonstrated understanding of policies, processes, practices and documentation used to deliver program services or the MNO Branch mandate
  • Demonstrated ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of and ability to use MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; knowledge of MS SharePoint

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Métis-specific and broader indigenous key challenges and programs and services available to address them
  • Registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators or accredited association in related field
  • Previous experience working within MNO and strong understanding of policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning

Experience

  • Previous 3+ years experience in a leadership or similar role or comparable experience motivating/leading others
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with personal and confidential information and issues in a mature, tactful and diplomatic manner
  • Demonstrated experience in acquiring and expanding knowledge and being flexible in a demanding and dynamic environment
  • Experience in writing high-quality reports, briefing notes and developing presentations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced multi-issue environment, serving a wide range of varied internal and external interests.

Preferred

  • Experience in recruitment, training, discipline procedures
  • Experience in conflict resolution
  • Previous work experience with Indigenous communities is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing relationships with a variety of internal / external stakeholders
  • Ability to deliver presentations on technical information in plain language to large and small groups with ease
