Métis citizens are represented at the local level through MNO Chartered Community Councils. The Councils are the foundation of the MNO in its push toward self-government and foster community empowerment and development for Métis citizens living within their geographic territory.
Community Councils operate in accordance with MNO Charter Agreements, which give councils the mandate to govern. The Charter Agreements, the Community Code, and the Community Electoral Code are the policy documents that Community Councils refer to when holding mandatory community elections. These documents also outline the rules and regulations for conducting council business and ensuring transparency and accountability through sound fiscal management.
The interests of the Community Councils are represented at the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO) through one of nine Regional Councillors.
