November 16, 2016, marks the 131st anniversary of the execution of Louis Riel. Members of the Métis community traditionally join together each year to honour and commemorate the life and work of Louis Riel, and to celebrate Métis culture.
In April of this year, the Supreme Court of Canada released a landmark decision in Daniels v. Canada. This case answered a constitutional question that was 149 years in the making—whether Métis and non-status Indians are also within Parliament’s legislative jurisdiction and responsibility—in the same way as First Nations and Inuit peoples. On behalf of a unanimous court, Justice Rosalie Abella answered this question in the affirmative and wrote that “[t]his case presents another chapter in the pursuit of reconciliation and redress” in Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. The Daniels case, along with other recent developments, are resulting in significant changes in existing Crown-Métis relationships.
Join the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Métis Nation of Ontario, on November 17, to mark this important occasion. Hear from a panel that includes Métis leadership, legal experts and those involved in this “road ahead” with the Métis.
