There are a number of MNO Codes Policies that govern MNO Elections including:
- Métis Nation of Ontario Electoral Code Part A
- Part A of the MNO Electoral Code contain the rules governing the Elections for the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO), MNO Youth Council (MNOYC), and the MNO Veterans Council (MNOVC). It also contains information about the election of PCMNO Senators and filling of vacancies at the AGA following the May election.
- Métis Nation of Ontario Electoral Code Part B
- Part B of the MNO Electoral Code contains the rules governing the Elections for Community Councils.
- Metis Nation of Ontario Policy #2018-001 – Verification of MNO Electoral Candidates
- Métis Nation of Ontario Policy #2019-003 Policy on Electronic and Telephone Voting
The purpose of the MNO Electoral Codes and related policies are to establish fair, open and democratic procedures and rules for MNO Elections.
NOTE: MNO elections are also subject to rulings of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
For example, in this election, considering recommendations of the PCMNO, the CEO determined voting methods by which electors will be able to cast a ballot.
Also, to ensure that it was possible to accommodate voters interested in requesting a paper ballot to vote (a voting option requested by the PCMNO), a PCMNO resolution authorized the CEO ammend dates and deadlines set out in Electoral Code.
As such, some of the dates and deadlines related to the May 2024 elections – that are detailed here – are different than those outlined in MNO’s Electoral Code and Policy documents.
It is the dates set by the CEO that be enforced related to the 2024 elections, based on the authority granted to him in this regard by the PCMNO.
