ELIGIBILITY

Any citizen of the MNO is eligible to be nominated as a Candidate if they satisfy all relevant sections of Article 6 of the Electoral Code,

There are eligibility criteria that affect all the positions. An individual is eligible to be nominated if on the day their nomination papers are filed they:

  • are a verified MNO citizen,
  • are 16 years of age or older,
  • are ordinarily a resident of Ontario (a person who actually lives and has lived continuously in Ontario for at least one full year prior to the date of the election),
  • have no outstanding obligations to the MNO,
  • have not been convicted within the past five years of an indictable offence,
  • have not been convicted, within the past five years, in connection with an MNO Election, of corrupt practice, accepting a bribe, dishonesty or malfeasance,
  • are not nor were in the one year prior to the date of the Election (May 6, 2024) a director or officer of another Aboriginal body where by being a director or officer would be placed in a conflict of interest situation, and
  • have not had their rights or privileges as an MNO citizen suspended.

In addition to these general criteria affecting all nominees, certain positions have additional eligibility criteria:

  • if seeking to be a candidate for Regional Councilor in the PCMNO, they must be ordinarily resident in the Region for which they seek to be nominated
  • if seeking to be youth candidate in the PCMNO or MNOYC, they must be 25 years of age or younger on the day of the election (May 6, 2024)
  • if seeking to be a candidate for the MNOVC, they must be a veteran
REQUIREMENTS FOR NOMINATIONS

In addition to the position-specific requirements below, all candidates must submit a written acceptance of the nomination and a statement that the candidate has read the MNO Electoral Code and MNO Bylaws and is eligible to be nominated as a candidate in the MNO election (see Article 6 of the MNO Electoral Code).

To facilitate the nomination process, the CEO has created nomination forms for the positions being elected May 6, 2024. for election.  It is not necessary to use the CEO-created forms to be a successful nominee.   

NOMINATORS

Any MNO citizen 16 or over are eligible to nominate candidates, including MNO staff. 

NOTE as detailed below, nominators nominating the PCMNO Youth Representative and positions on the MNOYC bust be over the age of 16 but under 30 years of age as of the date of the election (May 6, 2024)

As also detailed below, nominators for positions on the MNOVC must be veterans (as defined by the MNOVC in its MNO Charter Agreement).

CEO RULINGS REGARDING NOMINATION PACKAGES
  • To facilitate the nomination process, the CEO has created nomination forms for the positions being elected May 6, 2024. It is not necessary to use the CEO-created forms to be a successful nominee. 
  • For greater certainty, nominators may sign pages other than the CEO-created nomination form, as long as the pages contain all of the same information as required on the CEO-created nomination form.
  • The Chief Electoral Officer has ruled that scans of nominator signatures will be accepted on nomination forms. This means that it is acceptable to include scanned copies of signatures of those who are nominating the candidate.
  • For greater certainty, electronic signatures such as Adobe Sign will not be accepted as signatures for these purposes.
  • The Chief Electoral Officer has ruled that nominee signatures will only be accepted as part of a package submitted from nominees themselves. Candidates are asked to compile packages of signatures to be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by the nomination deadline.
  • Please note that an original non-scanned signature of the nominee (i.e. the candidate) accepting the nomination is required.
  • In order that the Chief Electoral Officer can communicate with potential candidates, all nominations should include full contact information for the nominee.
  • Where a non-refundable deposit is a requirement of nomination, the Chief Electoral Officer has ruled that payments must be received by certified cheque or money orders only. Cheques should be made out to The Métis Nation of Ontario.
CLOSE OF NOMINATIONS

Nominations close on March 11, 2024, at 5:00pm in the time zone of the candidate. Nominees are encouraged to submit their nomination packages early, providing the Chief Electoral Officer time to review and notify nominees of any omissions or errors.

POSITIONS FOR ELECTION

PCMNO EXECUTIVE POSITIONS: 

  • President
  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Secretary-Treasurer

In addition to other requirements, candidates for these positions require a minimum of seven (7) signatures of electors in seven of the nine regions.

Further, a $200.00 non-refundable deposit is required, by certified cheque or money order only. Cheques should be made out The Métis Nation of Ontario.

OTHER PCMNO POSITIONS: 

  • 9 Regional Councillors

In addition to other requirements, candidates for these positions require a minimum of twenty-one (21) signatures of electors from within their respective region.

Further, a $200.00 non-refundable deposit is required, by certified cheque or money order only. Cheques should be made out The Métis Nation of Ontario

  • 1 Post-Secondary Representative (PCMNO)

In addition to other requirements, candidates for this position require a minimum of four (4) signatures of electors from each of the nine regions. Any registered voter can nominate a Post-Secondary Representative.

Further, the nomination for this position must include a statement that the candidate intends to be a student at a post-secondary institution in Ontario for at least 2/3 of the term of office.

  • 1 Youth Representative (PCMNO)

Candidates for this position must be between the ages of 16 and 25 years on date of election (May 6, 2024).

In addition to other requirements, candidates for this position require a minimum of four signatures of electors who are over the age of 16 but under 30 years of age as of the date of the election (May 6, 2024) from seven of the nine regions.

Further, the nomination for this position must include a statement that on the date of the election the candidate on the will be between the ages of 16 and 25 years of age.

PCMNO COMPENSATION AND ROLE DESCRIPTIONS:

NOTE: PCMNO recently passed a resolution to split the positions of President and CEO. The salary of the PCMNO President could be subject to change.

METIS NATION OF ONTARIO YOUTH COUNCIL (MNOYC)

  • 9 Regional Youth Representatives
  • 1 MNOYC Chair Person

In addition to other requirements, candidates for these positions require a minimum of four (4) signatures of electors who are over the age of 16 but under 30 years of age as of the date of the election (May 6, 2024). Signatures must be from electors who reside in the region from which the candidate is nominated.

Further, the nomination for this position must include a statement that the candidate on the date of election will be between the ages of 16 and 25 years of age.

METIS NATION OF ONTARIO VETERAN COUNCIL (MNOVC)

  • President
  • Chair
  • Senator for Veterans
  • Secretary-Treasurer
  • Women’s Representative
  • Sergeant-at-Arms

In addition to other requirements, nominations of candidates for these positions require a minimum of four (4) signatures of electors who are veterans.

Further, candidates for these positions require a signed statement that the candidate is a veteran (defined as such by the MNOVC in its MNO Charter Agreement).

ANNOUNCEMENT OF CANDIDATES AND ACCLAMATIONS

Upon completing a review of all filed nominations to ensure they meet the necessary requirements, the MNO Chief Electoral Officer will issue an official candidates’ listing. The listing will be posted March 18, 2024 on the MNO website at www.metisnation.org/election.

ELECTOR LISTS

Once confirmed on March 28, 2024, candidates are entitled to receive a list of their electors.
