The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) has been made aware that Sanify Hand Sanitizer (Lot #005), a sanitizer distributed to MNO staff and Community Councils, has been recalled for failure to comply with federal regulations and may pose a health risk. Those who received Sanify should stop using the product immediately.

Technical-grade ethanol, a compound found in Sanify, had been temporarily approved by Health Canada due to a shortage of pharmaceutical and food grade ethanol. However, the product distributed did not receive the proper authorization to use technical-grade ethanol and failed to provide the required risk statements.

The sanitizer was distributed through Ontario, and several MNO Councils and staff received shipments.

What to do if you received Sanify

Stop use and dispose of the product immediately. Please follow municipal or regional guidelines for chemical and hazardous waste disposal, or return the product to a local pharmacy for proper disposal.

If you have used the hand sanitizer and are experiencing adverse health effects, contact your health care professional. Adverse reactions and health complaints can be reported to Health Canada or calling 1-866-234-2345.
