Canadian Partnership Against Cancer:
Building Métis Cancer Resilience

The health and wellbeing of all Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) citizens is a priority.

To meet the needs of Métis communities, the MNO has made numerous investments over the years to identify and understand the variety of health factors effecting MNO citizens in the province.

Given the disproportionate impact of cancer rates among Métis communities, the MNO has identified the subject as a key area of concern.

A new partnership with Canada will aid in developing Métis-led health initiatives to build cancer resilience within MNO communities. The MNO anticipates three-years of funding beginning in 2024.

The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer Project focuses on cancer prevention, education, and research. This initiative is designed to be province-specific, reaching all MNO citizens irrespective of their community or region. By seizing this opportunity, the MNO aims to establish enduring programs, address health requirements, and enhance our collective well-being. The goal is to pave the way for improved cancer journeys so that future generations within the community can reap the benefits.

Using Métis statistical data, this project will increase awareness, resources, and access to cancer information, including screening and preventative measures. Partnerships and internal MNO data, will provide a holistic understanding of Métis health and insights into their own experiences with cancer. Feedback from citizen engagement indicates that Ovarian, Cervical, Colon, and Prostate Cancer are key areas of concern.

Cancer and its affects impact us all and that our historical relationship with the Canadian and Ontario health system has been challenging and even discriminatory. But despite historical challenges with the health system, this partnership signifies a positive step forward in enhancing Métis health outcomes and well-being.

Together, we can overcome obstacles and build a healthier future for all.
