Toronto / Niagara, ON (November 14, 2023) – In recognition of Louis Riel Day on November 16, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) has arranged the illumination of two iconic Canadian landmarks – the CN Tower and Niagara Falls.

Observed annually on November 16, Louis Riel Day solemnly marks the anniversary of Louis Riel’s execution in 1885. This day is of profound historical importance, symbolizing Riel’s pivotal leadership during the Northwest Resistance—a bold and courageous stance taken by the Métis community to resist the encroachment of the Canadian government upon their rights and way of life. Beyond the injustice of his execution, it is crucial to recognize Riel’s remarkable political achievements and the substantial sacrifices he endured for the Métis people. Quotes

“These impactful initiatives are part of Canada’s ongoing journey to Reconciliation. On Louis Riel Day, MNO citizens and communities come together to celebrate Métis rights and culture, acknowledging its profound contributions to the fabric of Canada. This annual commemoration not only honours our ancestors but also underscores the importance of the progress that Métis people are making in fulfilling Riel’s dream of Métis self-government. Notably, Bill C-53 is a key step in the ratification of Métis self-government agreements signed in February between Canada and the Métis Nation of Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Riel’s unwavering leadership and advocacy for Métis rights laid the groundwork for his dream of a Canada dedicated to safeguarding Métis rights.”
