Native Bat Monitoring Program calls on Métis citizens!
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is calling on citizens in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 to join a fun, hands-on citizen science project that’s all about bats! The MNO Native Bat Monitoring Program is back, offering you a chance to help protect Ontario’s nocturnal winged friends.
This isn’t your average science project—it’s a hands-on opportunity to help monitor eight bat species, including four that are already endangered and two more that could soon be on that list.
From late May to late September 2025, this project invites you to set up an acoustic monitoring unit outside your home—on a tree, fence, or flagpole—to capture the secret nighttime activities of Ontario’s bats. Each unit stays in place for four days before being passed to the next volunteer.
In partnership with the Toronto Zoo, this program provides all the necessary gear and easy-to-follow training. The data you collect will support vital research through the Toronto Zoo’s Native Bat Conservation Program and the North American Bat Monitoring Program, contributing to the future of bat conservation.
If that’s not enough to convince you, every volunteer gets a $25 gift card and a personalized report highlighting the bat species detected. Plus, you’ll be invited to a virtual volunteer appreciation event featuring a presentation from the Toronto Zoo, an overview of the monitoring findings, and even door prizes!
Don’t miss your chance to be part of this exciting adventure. Space is limited, so grab your spot now by filling out the Bat Monitoring Volunteer Form and emailing it to EmilyA@metisnation.org.
Let’s get out there and show those bats some love—Maarsii!
