Tailored with care, the Métis Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program is designed to support children and families from the pre-natal stage up to the age of six

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is proud to offer the Métis Healthy Babies Healthy Children (MHBHC) Program, a vital support initiative for families with children from prenatal to six years old. Funded by Ontario’s Indigenous Healing and Wellness Strategy, this program is an important resource for Métis families, ensuring that Métis children receive the best possible start in life.

The MHBHC program provides comprehensive preparation for parenting, this includes pre-natal and post-natal care. Its helps families create a nurturing environment for the healthy development of children. This is achieved through a combination of home visits, service coordination, and referrals.

The program is voluntary and welcomes any Indigenous family that requests its services, emphasizing inclusivity and support for children at risk. Remarkably, the program has seen a 28% increase since its inception in MNO citizens seeking its services, demonstrating a growing trust and engagement within the community.

Testimonials from staff and clients reveal the transformative impact of the MHBHC program. A recent client expressed gratitude this way:

"I really appreciate all of your support. It truly means a lot to me and my family. You've been so good to us! I look forward to the check-ins and upcoming program events."

Rebecca V, a long-time MNO staff member, shared a touching success story, illustrating the program’s ability to guide families through challenging circumstances:

“I have worked with the MNO for many years. Throughout that time I have seen so many positive changes in the lives of clients. I had a client who was living in shelters lose custody of their child.  But, after rebuilding their life from ground zero, today, they live in a stable home, have regained custody of their child. The child is thriving and reaching developmental milestones beyond her age. It's what makes my job so rewarding."

Another staff member, Kelly R, expressed appreciation for the day-to-day interactions with clients and the relationships forged with MNO:

Working for the MHBHC program I have the opportunity to support families and their children. I enjoy the day-to-day conversations with clients and relationships I have made with Council. I am happy to be part of the MHBHC team, where my coworkers and supervisors take such pride in their roles.”

Sydney H, a MHBHC Coordinator in the Oshawa/Durham region, highlights the program’s flexibility in tailoring support based to client needs and how events and gatherings bring the community together:

“Working as a Coordinator for the MHBHC program has allowed me to positively engage with community members, other agencies, and programs to help support the local Métis community. The program allows me to cater the support I provide to clients based on what they identify as areas of need. Afterall, they know their own situation best! One of my favorite parts of being a coordinator is planning and running events, such as community kitchens, learning events, and children’s activities. These events allow community members to come together to connect, learn, and have fun!”
