The MNO and Georgian College introduce the Employment in Energy Project. A 30-week program including an academic and workplace training component offered at Georgian’s Barrie campus.
May 13, 2010 — The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) in partnership with Georgian College’s School of Engineering is proud to introduce the Technology Foundations for Employment in Energy Project. The thirty-week program includes both an academic and workplace training component and will be offered through the Barrie campus of Georgian College.
“This initiative will provide Aboriginal learners with the stepping stones required to build skills and gain the knowledge needed to realize their employment goals in the rapidly expanding and diversifying energy sector, ” said Gary Lipinski, President of the Métis Nation of Ontario. “Mutually beneficial partnerships like this one with Georgian College will increase Métis self reliance and contribute to ongoing improvements to the over all well being of Métis individuals, families and communities in Ontario.”
This project is the result of a long standing and successful relationship between the MNO and Georgian College which was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in September of 2009. The MNO successfully secured the funding for the program through the Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF). The project is expected to provide both short and long-term employment opportunities for Métis, First Nations and Inuit people in Ontario’s expanding Energy sector.
“This is the latest example of a partnership that is helping to provide educational and career prospects for Aboriginal students,” says Georgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn. “We are pleased that these longstanding relationships continue to create new opportunities.”
Participants who successfully complete the Technology Foundations program requirements will receive a Certificate of Achievement as well as six post-secondary credits. Four of the credits can be transferred to further studies in the School of Engineering Technology. The four-month work placement provides an opportunity for strong partnerships between participants and the energy sector to develop. The placements will also provide the student with practical entry-level experience that will increase the probability of further successful employment. In some cases, employers may keep the student on as an employee once the placement is complete.
The program is free for qualified applicants. Students may also be eligible for training allowances during their training and work placement. Culturally-appropriate academic and workplace supports will be provided to participants through mentorship, guidance and additional supports as required.
The deadline for applications is June 18 and classes begin July 5 at Georgian College’s Barrie Campus.
