Food security and nutrition is a critical foundation for the health and well-being of youth, and the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is committed to ensuring that Métis children have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. In response to the growing need for support, the MNO is proud to announce the launch of the MNO School Food Program, an initiative designed to assist Métis parents, guardians, and eligible youth in accessing healthy food to support the nutritional and educational success of Métis children enrolled in K-12 education across Ontario.
With a focus on improving food access, the MNO School Food Program seeks to help Métis children meet their nutritional needs and promote positive attitudes toward healthy eating. The program aims to equip children with the knowledge and skills to make healthy food choices, which are essential for their growth, development, and academic success.
In addition to providing financial assistance, the program encourages families to further enhance their nutrition knowledge by taking the Gaples Institute’s Nutrition Education for Teens and Young Adults course. This free, online course offers practical guidance on developing healthy eating habits, empowering youth and families to make informed food choices.
“Establishing the MNO School Food Program is an important action in ensuring that Métis children have access to the resources they need for optimal health,” said Mitch Case, MNO Provincial Secretary for Education. “By addressing food insecurity and promoting healthy habits, we are investing in the future of Métis children and supporting their educational success.”
