Training Opportunity:
Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) Training for MNO Citizens!
As part of the MNO’s prawgram danaliz dlo avèk léd dla kawmunoté (Community-Based Water Quality Monitoring Program), the LRC Branch is partnering with an instructor from Fleming College to offer interested MNO citizens training through the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN). We are hoping to have OBBN certified MNO citizens participating in the MNO’s prawgram danaliz dlo avèk léd dla kawmunoté program during the 2023 field year.
What is OBBN?
OBBN is an aquatic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring network for Ontario’s lakes, streams and wetlands. The course will cover biomonitoring theory, sampling methodologies, and benthic macroinvertebrate identification. Upon receiving a passing grade, participants will be certified to collect and contribute benthic invertebrate data to Ontario’s official dataset managed by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP). This certification can be a valuable addition to anyone considering a career in the environmental sciences.
What are benthic macroinvertebrates?
Benthic (meaning “bottom-dwelling”) macroinvertebrates are small aquatic organisms and aquatic larval stages of insects without backbones that are visible to the naked eye. They can be found in lakes, rivers, streams and ponds. Examples include blackflies, dragonflies, mayflies, worms and even some crustaceans.
They are a valuable indicator to assess water quality and overall aquatic ecosystem health. As they cannot migrate from one area to another they can provide localized knowledge and insight into the health of the waters in a given area.
Training Commitments:
The training will consist of a course and study day that will require two weekends of participation in Spring 2023, followed by a test component. The training will be virtual and in person. In person sessions will be held in each region of the MNO. Electronic study materials and hands-on learning materials will be sent to each participant. Honoraria, per diems and mileage will be provided for each day of the course, plus a study day (total of 4 days). The cost of the course will also be covered by the MNO.
