Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) citizen Barbaranne Wright received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal during a ceremony at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Ottawa on National Aboriginal Day, June 21. 2012.

Barbaranne was one of several Aboriginal people to receive the Medal at a ceremony commemorating 200 years of Aboriginal voluntary military service in the defence of Canada. Barbaranne is the women’s representative on the MNO Niagara Region Métis Council and her Medal recognized her work in a number of Veterans projects. Barbaranne is the daughter of a Métis veteran and a number of her ancestors fought in the War of 1812.

The Medals were presented by the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs for Canada. “What a great day to be a proud Métis Woman,” Barbaranne said.
