Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) representatives recently took an underground tour of the Barrick Gold-Williams Mine located at Hemlo, near Marathon, by Lake Superior.
Members of the Lakehead/Nipigon/Michipicoten Region 2 Consultation Committee spent four hours in the mine, overseeing that the mining company responsibly maintained regulations regarding environmental protection and safeguarding the Métis Way of Life.
Following the underground tour, the Consultation Committee held a meeting, followed by an above-ground tour of the former David Bell Mine and the Golden Giant Mine, which are adjacent to the Williams Mine.
The gold mined from the Hemlo mine was used to create the gold medals for the 2015 Pan AM and Parapan AM Games.
