On March 16, Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) leadership met with the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage to discuss Métis led efforts to reclaim, revitalize, maintain and strengthen the Michif language.

The MNO aims to preserve and expand knowledge of the Michif language by delivering a Michif language and culture camp immersion program for 40 participants; producing over four hours of interviews with Michif speakers; and translating online resources such as posters, flashcards and stories from English and French into Michif.

Present on the call were MNO President Margaret Froh and PCMNO Secretary-Treasurer Jo Anne Young.

“We want to acknowledge Canadian Heritage’s support of the MNO’s efforts to protect, preserve and revitalize the Michif language,” stated President Froh. “The MNO welcomes continued partnership with Canadian Heritage around this important work and strengthening a respectful government-to-government, bilateral relationship that can positively impact the lives of our Métis children, grandchildren and future generations.”
