The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is hosting the second webinar in its mental health-focused Speaker Series on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 7PM-8PM.

This month’s webinar “Parenting Survival Guide: Understanding Parenting Stress and What to do About it,” features insight and strategies from guest expert Dr. Susan Hopkins.

Dr. Susan Hopkins is the Executive Director of the MEHRIT Centre and an expert on the Shanker Self-Reg® method. Developed by Dr. Stuart Shanker, the Self-Reg Method includes stress management strategies that enhance and highlight the role of relationships in parenting.

Similar to the Speakers Series webinar held on September 3,, Métis families are invited to join the virtual discussion and will have the opportunity to raise questions and concerns with Dr. Hopkins.

Key topics explored in Dr. Hopkins’ presentation will include:

  • Stress and Parenting: How our relationships and interactions with our children are impacted by both positive and negative stressors
  • Resilience: How Shanker Self-Reg® can improve our ability to get back to a state of balance and harmony after stressful experiences
  • The crucial difference between self-regulation and self-control
  • Reframing behaviour in Children and Youth: What it means and How it helps us see children in a whole new, and often more sympathetic light

Dr. Susan Hopkins

A passionate advocate for children, families, schools and communities, Dr. Susan Hopkins is the Executive Director of The MEHRIT Centre. Susan has over two decades of experience in education, working in early years, K-12 and post-secondary contexts from Italy to Canada’s North, including seven years working and living in the Tłı̨chǫ First Nation in the Northwest Territories. Susan has worked as a classroom teacher, program support teacher, vice-principal, district coordinator for inclusion, researcher, curriculum developer, and post-secondary instructor. Susan led the NWT implementation of the Early Development Instrument in kindergarten and developed the NWT play and culture-based kindergarten curriculum. Susan recently co-authored the Self-Reg Schools Handbook for Educators and developed the online resources for the Principal’s edition with Stuart Shanker.
