PCMNO Meeting Recap

The Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO) held a meeting on November 7, 2024, in a hybrid format, with in-person attendance at the JW Marriott Rosseau Resort in Muskoka, Ontario.
President Froh provided an update emphasizing the significance of November for Métis remembrance, reflecting on Louis Riel’s legacy, and acknowledging the contributions of Métis veterans. She discussed ongoing Métis National Council (MNC) reform efforts and reaffirmed the MNO’s commitment to advancing self-governance. Key appointments to the Provincial Secretariat were announced to enhance operational focus.
Draft updates to the Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality policies were presented, garnering feedback from Councilors. Discussions included enhancing safeguards against security breaches and improving disclosure mechanisms.
President Froh provided updates on key issues raised by citizens through the Captains of the Hunt (COTH), including concerns about harvesting rights, safety protocols, and the sustainability of traditional practices. In response to increasing responsibilities, David Hamilton was appointed as Deputy Chief Captain of the Hunt to provide additional support and capacity.
Discussions on economic development emphasized the importance of regional collaboration and the active involvement of community members in shaping strategies that align with local priorities. The Regional Economic Sustainability Framework, presented during the meeting, outlined a vision for enhancing economic opportunities, focusing on capacity building, partnerships, and sustainable investments. Highlights included plans to support Métis-owned businesses, develop renewable energy projects, and secure funding for critical infrastructure. Councilors were encouraged to engage their regions in consultations to ensure the framework reflects diverse community needs and drives meaningful economic growth across Métis communities.
The meeting concluded with President Froh expressing gratitude for the Council’s collaborative efforts and reiterating the importance of advancing the organization’s strategic goals.
