The Métis Nation of Alberta has recently released a Plainspeak document as a part of its ongoing “Hunt for Justice” in relation to Métis harvesting rights in Alberta. This case is a test case for the entire Métis Nation because it deals with the important legal issue of Métis mobility, amongst other precedent setting issues that are relevant to Ontario Metis.
In June 2011, the Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench heard the appeal in Medicine Hat. Alberta Métis are awaiting a decision in the appeal hearing, which is expected to be released in the Fall/Winter of 2011. The MNO’s lawyers – Jean Teillet and Jason Madden – are legal counsel for the Métis Nation of Alberta in the case.
