The following is a description of the major targeted bursaries that the MNO offers in addition to those offered through the MNO Bursary Endowment Fund. Unless otherwise stated, applications for these awards are available through the Financial Aid Office, Indigenous Student Centre, or through Student Support Services at each specific listed participating college or university as noted below.
Hydro One Métis Nation of Ontario Bursary for Energy Education
This bursary is available to Métis students who demonstrate financial need, are Canadian citizens who reside permanently in Ontario, are at least 18 years of age, and are currently enrolled in the undergraduate Electrical Engineering Technician Program or Technology Program at Northern College. A short essay may be required.
Métis Nation of Ontario and Detour Gold Northern College Bursary
This bursary is available to MNO citizens at Northern College who live in Region 3; are not registered as an “Indian” under the Indian Act or as an Inuk on an Inuit registry; and are pursuing education and training that relates to, or supports, the mining sector in Ontario. This includes students who will commonly find mining-related employment upon graduation. A written component may be required.
Métis Nation of Ontario and Detour Gold Collège Boréal Bursary
This bursary is available to MNO citizens at Collège Boréal who live in Region 3; are not registered as an “Indian” under the Indian Act or as an Inuk on an Inuit registry; and are pursuing education and training that relates to, or supports, the mining sector in Ontario. This includes students who will commonly find mining-related employment upon graduation. A written component may be required.
Sault College MNO Powley Electrical Award
This bursary is available to Métis students at Sault College who demonstrate financial need, are Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Ontario, are at least 18 years of age, and are currently enrolled at Sault College pursuing studies in the electrical sector. A short essay may be required.
Métis Nation of Ontario and Ontario Power Generation Energy Sector Award
This bursary is available to Métis students at Cambrian College who demonstrate financial need, are Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Ontario, demonstrate current involvement in extracurricular activities, and have a minimum B- average at Cambrian College. A short essay may be required.
Dr. Tony Belcourt Endowment Fund for Métis in the Arts
Established in 2010, this bursary is available to Métis students at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) who demonstrate financial need; are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons; are residents of Ontario; and are enrolled in full-time or part-time undergraduate studies at OCAD. Preference will be given to a Métis student pursuing research in the area of Aboriginal Visual Culture.
The Joseph Poitras Métis Bursary Fund
The Joseph Poitras Métis Bursary Fund was established in recognition of Joseph’s strong advocacy for educational opportunities for Métis youth. This bursary is for a Métis individual who has demonstrated both financial need and a desire to improve their life or employability through additional education or training programs. It is not restricted to high school students and has no upper age limits. Limited funds are also available for a Métis’ educational application fee. Preference will be given to applicants with a connection to the Oshawa Durham Region Métis community, but does not preclude consideration of others. The Application Deadline is October 15th of each year.
