The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is pleased to offer the Canada Pre-Natal Nutrition Program. This Program funded by the Government of Canada and is designed to help at risk Indigneous children 0 to 6 months of age and their families. Program Staff help families by providing access to knowledge, skills, and healthy foods that support healthy pregnancies and early infant nutrition.
Program Staff work to help improve the health, welfare, and well being of off-reserve Indigenous mothers and babies. The focus of the Program is to help expecting mothers and families to access the knowledge and resources that will give them the best chance to begin their families from a nutritionally grounded perspective. As such Program Staff actively seek to involve children, parents, guardians, community members, and service providers in every aspect of the Program. All of the decision making and actions taken within the Program are community based.
Program Staff help families in need address issues with pre-natal, infant, and child nutrition and development. They also help families receive parenting and care giving skills training and resources. The goals of this Program are to improve the health of pregnant Indigenous women in Canada, increase the number of babies born with healthy birth weights, decrease the number of overweight babies resulting from gestational diabetes, and decrease the number of preventable birth defects in Indigenous children.
The Canada Pre-Natal Nutrition Program is currently available in Thunder Bay.
