OTTAWA, ON – May 27th, 2025 – The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) welcomes the commitments to reconciliation in the Government of Canada’s Speech from the Throne, delivered by His Majesty King Charles III. As the democratically elected, federally and provincially recognized government of Métis citizens and communities in Ontario, the MNO was heartened by the King’s formal recognition of the Crown and Indigenous Peoples’ enduring relationship, and the clear distinction and inclusion of Métis people in that relationship.
The MNO was particularly encouraged by the federal government’s stated commitment to self-determination. The speech reaffirmed that self-determination is a fundamental Canadian value the government will protect.
We also welcome the decision to double of the Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program from $5 billion to $10 billion. Ensuring that Métis communities have equitable access to these opportunities will be key and will help create long-term prosperity.
In advancing this shared journey of reconciliation, MNO has been clear about its central priorities. Alongside the Government of Canada, we can continue building on this momentum by:
- Strengthening our government-to-government relationship through the full implementation of the Métis Self-Government Agreements;
- Addressing longstanding historic Métis claims and unfulfilled promises made to Métis communities from Ontario westward;
- Improving access to culturally relevant health care, addictions treatment, and mental health services for Métis citizens;
- Expanding investments in housing, education, infrastructure, and economic development to ensure our communities can thrive; and
- Committing to the meaningful co-development and co-design of all federal policies and programs that impact Métis people — moving beyond one-size-fits-all approaches toward truly Métis-specific solutions.
The Métis Nation of Ontario remains a engaged and willing to strengthen its government-to-government relationship with Prime Minister Carney and the Government of Canada. We look forward to building a future Canada where the rights, voices, and aspirations of Métis people are fully recognized and respected.
