Urban Portage Challenge / Paw Voyage:
The MNO Walking Competition Returns!
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is excited to announce the return of the Urban Portage Challenge (UPC)—and this year, we’re all about dogging your steps—literally! Citizens are encouraged to invite their furry or four-legged companions to join in this three-month walking competition as we track which community can rack up the most steps. The challenge runs September 1 to November 21, 2025.
Each participating community will be led by a Community Champion—your local Métis Family Wellbeing Coordinator—who will help organize activities, share updates, and keep everyone motivated. Like prior years, the top three communities with the highest total step counts will receive funding to host a celebration event. Follow our leaderboard for regular updates!
Registration will remain open throughout the duration of the challenge. To sign up, simply contact your local Métis Family Wellbeing Coordinator.
We know that mobility and ability vary for everyone, so please participate in the way that feels right for you. Walking is a great way to enjoy personal time, connect with friends and family, and reduce your carbon footprint. We’re thrilled to have you with us!
To track your steps, you can use a Fitbit, pedometer, smartphone health apps, or any step-counting tool you prefer. We trust all participants to report their steps honestly.
Special Feature: Paw Voyage
This year, share the journey with your canine companion! If you email photos of yourself walking your dog (or other companion) to your Community Champion, you’ll be entered into a draw to win a Paw Voyage leash (while supplies last). Plus, each month we’ll select one winner to receive a PetSmart/Pet Valu gift card!
Don’t forget to share your walking adventures with us on social media using #MNOSteps and #PawVoyage to showcase your Métis pride (and your pups).
You can join the challenge as an individual or as part of a team. To register, reach out to your local Community Champion at your nearest MNO office or call OneMNO at 1-800-263-4889 Ext. 7.
Be part of your own incredible journey as we walk together, get healthier, and strengthen our Métis connections. Whether it’s footprints or paw prints, every step brings us closer as a community!
